Concerning my latest purchase of a '97 xlt, I have no warm air coming out any vents no matter what position is selected.

The fan works fine, the vent/floor/def selector works (panel & floor combo kicks on ac. don't think it's supposed to there) Ac works (was replaced by the PO previous owner). The temp select knob works the door actuator fine. The correct amount of coolant is in it's jug.

He also said he replaced the timing belt and while he was at it, he replaced the water pump, even though it supposedly didn't need it.

The top radiator hose and sides of the radiator were quite cool after 45 mins of not running. The heater hoses felt hot, but that could have been from engine heat.

Possibly a plugged heater core, but because the temp gage also reads only 25% when fully warmed up, makes me think the thermostat is froze open or gone, or the incorrect one. I should check the radiator & hose when it's warmed up.

Am I missing something obvious or are there better checks that I should be doing?

Run the engine up to operating temp. Then check both of the heater hoses as close to the heater core as you can get - they should be very hot to the touch. Even if the t-stat is removed the coolant will be around 160 degrees.

What shape is the coolant in? What color is it? Any rust present?

All hoses felt plenty hot. The coolant is a green with a hint of dark. Not super dark or muddy.

Check the blend door operation. May need to remove the console if you have one. You should be able to see movement of the shaft. If not then remove the actuator and see if operates from cold to hot. Also note what position it is in when you remove it. If you have a small mirror you can check the blend door connection where it meets the actuator. They have been known to destroy it requiring a new blend door.

Today I was going to cut into the plastic behind the glove box, but someone beat me to it. I found a towel holding the blend door shut. I pulled the towel for now and will use the doorman replacement part.

I bought the ez install blend door kit, to install from the glove box. But I am stuck on how to get the actuator out of the way, so I can install the hinge part. I pulled 3 screws and it can move around freely but it is trapped in the cage of lower heat vents. I removed 3 screws from the heat vent, but it does't move much at all, because it is trapped as well. A pry bar can't open the gap enough either. Good Grief!

The console was fun to remove too.

And that is why I tell people to bite the bullet and make the repair the correct way....
It may be "tough" for some people but in the end it is only a bunch of screws and not as bad a people make it out to be.

One tool that makes it go faster is a cordless impact wrench.

Today I have heat. Right on time. I had to be the "Prymaster", and still have some time left to put parts back together.

Since I couldn't get the actuator out, I put it in it's normal position, then from inside the box, I dropped the metal hinge pin on the shaft. Then I pryed?the actuator down, and was able to get the blend door in position. Then the actuator shaft went up into it when I released the pry bar and adjusted the open/close position of the door.
