Default Ignition key recoding

Hello,
I purchased a 2001 EB with one after market ignition key. To make a long story short the after market key somehow decoded itself and it will not start the truck. The ford key works fine, so I'm thinking the code was wiped. Any one know how to recode a key?

Hope this helps...
Can I program a new key myself if I have no working keys?

No, here are your options.

1. Preferred Option: Call a mobile Automotive Locksmith to come to your
vehicle to originate a new key. The Locksmith will then have to connect a
special computer to your vehicle to program the new key.

2. Tow your vehicle to a Dealership and they will originate a new key. The
Dealership with then have to connect a special computer to your vehicle
to program the new key.

Can I program a second key myself if I have one working key?

No, here are your options.

1. Preferred Option: Call or go to an Automotive Locksmith and they will have to
connect a special computer to your vehicle to program the second key.

2. Go to a Dealership and they will have to connect a special computer to your
vehicle to program the second key.

Can I program a third key myself if I have two working keys?

Yes, once you have had the new key cut by a Locksmith
or other qualified persons use the following instructions.

1. Insert an existing working key into the ignition cylinder.

2. Turn the ignition cylinder to ON (RUN) and back to OFF.

3. Remove the existing working key and, within five seconds, insert a second working
key and turn it to ON (RUN) then back OFF.

4. Remove second working key and insert the new key before ten seconds have
elapsed and turn it to ON (RUN). Leave it on for one second and turn back to OFF.

5. The security light will light up for three seconds to indicate that the new
key has been successfully programmed.

They're also in your manual...

Basically, you'll need 2 working keys to program more keys. Ask the dealership how much it is. A lot of times, a locksmith will do it for cheaper, plus, they'll come to you (instead of having it towed there).

Stupid Question: What if I use the same programmed key for steps 1 and 2? I guess it will know that it isn't two different programmed keys?

Every key has it's own unique code so yes the computer will be able to tell. When I bought my '02 it only came with one key but for $90 ( $35 Vin # cut key + $55 programing) I was able to get my second key and have now programed a third for a back up. As long as you always have two keys that are programed to the rig you will be okay, But a word of advise even though the keys are more $ make sure and use Genuine OEM Ford keys ( they have less tendency to loose programing)
