I had a Chevy Tahoe that burned oil from mile one, it was about 1 quart down at the 3,000 mile oil change. I complained about it to Chevy countless times and the response was it was within spec. As I stacked on the miles it got worse and worse, around 45,000 miles it was burning a quart every 1,500 miles so the dealer was able to get authorization to change the valve stem seals. That did not fix the problem (I new it was rings). Again was told they were going to do nothing after I had sent several letters to the corporate office.
Then one day I tried a new Chevy dealership service dept. Come to find out if you have an agressive dealership who will fight GM for you then you are much better off. The new service dept. manager felt the same as me that it was not right. So they did an oil consumptin test where they seal the drain plug and dip stick. After 1,000 miles I bring it back and it was down nearly a quart. After a short wait I get a call from the dealer advising they received authorization to install a new motor. So it took me 4 years and 60,000 miles to get the probelm fixed.
The point to the story, I was told by the service manager that it made it much easier for him to get the motor as I had meticulous records of every oil change and how much the oil was down, I had created a record of complaints regarding oil consumption from the beginning, and lastly I found a good service dept. willing to go to bat for me.
So my guess is your oil consumption will only get worse over time, it may be in spec now but what will it be at 50,000 miles? Get on them and stay on them about it.
