Ford has been our vehicle of choice for 4 generations and may stop after this!
I need help I'll try to be brief.

Last month my 2005 expy 5.4L 108K miles started with all the classic signs of cam-phaser failure (rough idle, stalling, sounds like a diesel). I attempted every fix possible to no avail, I took it to our Ford dealer and they said low oil pressure has caused cylinder wall damage= NEW ENGINE. I bought a re-manned engine from a local shop with upgraded oil pump and ratcheting tentioners to avoid chain slap and new VVT solenoids. I installed it and have the exact same problems. I get a P0012 for bank 1 over retarded. I'm sooo angry that I've spent $4500 and nothing was fixed. I think there is a PCM issue or wiring problem. Please Please help.

If it is the same problem as with the other engine I would look at the harness for the solenoids first.

Only if they take the time to fully diagnose the problem - and the customer is willing to pay for the time involved.
The industry has given the impression that the "diagnostic scan" is a master mechanic that fixes all problems with any vehicle. Nope, nothing more than a super duper high end code reader and programmer. Someone has to interpret the results it generates. It points you in the right direction most of the time.

Possible Solutions The main thing to check is to verify the operation of the VCT solenoid. You're looking for a sticking or stuck VCt solenoid valve caused by contamination. Refer to vehicle specific repair manual to perform component tests for the VCT unit. Notes: Dealer techs have advanced tools and the ability to follow detailed troubleshooting steps, including the ability to test components using a scan tool

I found this online. Hope this helps

Thanks you mystik,
Your second post did not have a link. I hope you can still post it.

I did unplug the CVT from the truck and used a jumper wire from each solenoid directly to the battery to actuate them, one seemed to work less effectively so I replaced both of them, unfortunately the expy is experiencing the same problems.

I have my Expedition at the engine shop, I have asked them to get the hot oil pressure reading and check the timing.

It does not rattle at start up, but starts after driving a short distance, and is only noticeable at idle (Its hard to tell cruising around).

Side note: The other day after getting off the freeway the expedition was sputtering and ready to stall but no codes.

A friend suggested the MAF. Has anyone see the MAF cause issues like this?

The 2nd posting was for the 1st posting, just letting you know where I got the info from sorry for the confusion. Listen, if you have a MAF issue, normally you should get a code. Im thinking when your engine is hot, your ECM might be shorting out or you have a shorted wire somewhere. Obviously its not the engine, cause you replaced it.This has to be narrowed down. Im wondering if your ECM has ever been flashed (just a thought). I am going to continue researching your issue. Keep me posted
