I just picked up a 1997 XLT 4x4 with 120K miles. Like many of you with a first post, I have a question that i just can't find an answer to (make that 2 questions)

1. There seems to be a squeaking noise coming from the rear passenger side. It's not a brake indicator, but rather a constant squeak that i think might be in the suspension or possibly the bearing. It does not increase with speed or RPM, but if I push on the gas, I can make it go away. Let off the gas or just cruise normally and it's there. While rolling, I can take the tranny out of gear and it's still there.

2. When I start downhill with the cruise control on at around 70 mph, there is a strange growling noise that is coming from the front end. If I push on the gas it goes away. For those of you that have ever driven humvee it sounds like the cooling fan kicking in on one of them.

any thoughts?

thanks.

For the front end it does almost sound like it may be bearings due to the fact that when you put a load on it by pressing the gas you can get the sound to go away ( costing or crusing the bearings will have more play since nothing is putting extra force on them )

For the rear have you checked all of the bushings? Do you have any gear oil on the back side of the brake backing plates?

Being that it is a '97 4x4 with 120K I would recomend changing out at least the outer bearings in both axles ( espescially if you are running over sized tires) if nothing else it may help with your fuel milage a little and you will have to change out the gear oil while your in there so that is a plus as well since you just picked up the rig and don't know when it was done last ( if ever ).
