Hi guys, new to the forums!

I have an 08 expy. I started getting the wrench light with no symptoms about a month ago. 2 weeks of no symptoms went by and I started to ignore the light. My code reader couldn't pull a code and the CEL was not on.

Soon I would drive for a bit, shut down, then get a no crank no start. OR a partial crank no start. Let it sit for a bit, checked the fluids, still no CEL. Try to start it and I would crank over no problem, but I would have the wrench no CEL.

Replaced the starter as I thought it was the solenoid. Didnt get the wrench or starting problems for 3 solid joy filled weeks. Until I took a long trip. Today I did a 60 mile run cruising at 85 most of the way. shut her down, and I got a no crank no start. Let it sit for 10 min, cranked over fine. Got a wrench light. Made the same trip home, same speed, with a wrench light the whole way home. Got home, shut down, start up fine no light.

Now to what I have done in the recent past. New plugs, new VCT solenoid driver side, dropped trans pan, changed fluid and filter, had the PCM/ TCM updated. The ford laptop didnt pull any codes.

Summary: NO CEL, Intermittent wrench light, intermittent no crank/ partial crank no start

HEELLLPPP I have considered that I got a bad remand starter. But it seems the problem is so intermittent that the starter may have never been the problem to begin with. just a $140 coincidence.

You probably have an issue with a module connected to the ecm. The most common has been the throttle body but you should diagnose it vs tossing parts at it.

The low end scanners will not pick up the "deeper" issues that the big boy scanners will.

When the ford laptop was connected to it was the wrench indicator on?

Thanks for the reply,

The wrench light is so intermittent and always goes away after shut down, I couldnt get an appointment at the dealership and have the light on too. The stars didnt align for me lol

I dont have any throttle hesitation, rough idle, or power loss. WOT is actually better than when I bought it a year ago since I cleaned the MAF and TB and did the plugs.

Any pin point ideas?

I don't have the manuals for the 08's but the following is for the 07's. I think the wrench on yours may be the MIL on the 07's.

The MIL notifies the driver that the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected an on board diagnostic (OBD) emission-related component or system concern. When this occurs, an OBD diagnostic trouble code (DTC) sets.

The MIL is located in the instrument cluster and is labeled CHECK ENGINE, SERVICE ENGINE SOON or the international standards organization (ISO) standard engine symbol.
The MIL is illuminated during the instrument cluster prove out for approximately 4 seconds.
The MIL remains illuminated after instrument cluster prove out if:
an emission-related concern and DTC exists.
the PCM does not send a control message to the instrument cluster (applications with the MIL controlled through the communication link).
the PCM is operating in the hardware limited operation strategy (HLOS).
The MIL remains off during the instrument cluster prove out if an indicator or instrument cluster concern is present.
To turn off the MIL after a repair, a reset command from the scan tool must be sent, or 3 consecutive drive cycles must be completed without a concern.
For all MIL concerns, go to Section 3 , Symptom Charts.
If the MIL flashes at a steady rate, a severe misfire condition may exist.
If the MIL flashes erratically, the PCM can reset while cranking if the battery voltage is low.
The MIL flashes after a period of time with the key in the RUN position (engine not running) if DTC P1000 is set.

Yea this wrench light was something new for the 08s. So do you think the wrench and the no start condition are two unrelated issues?
