The bus shop I used to work in, any time we suspected internal trans problems first thing we would do is to drop the pan and inspect the fluid with a bright flashlight. If it had a metal-flake appearance we would swap out the trans. Never had a torque converter fail, but did split a few flex-plates. I know these aren't the same, but it is what it is......

At that mileage even if it was the torque converter I would swap trans since it is basically out anyway.

Sounds like you have a set of planitary gears failing... Wouldn't bother with rebuild just replace...

I have heard of guys going 3-5 thousands miles with broken\no overdrive wouldn't recommend it though. There is a retaining ring that fails on one of the clutch units, it causes loss of overdrive and the overdrive servo breaks its retaining ring. Slowly starts to tear itself apart. Been a known problem from Ford for many years but I have rebuilt trans as new as 2005 with same problem.
