Mine ran like new, I just couldn't stand the noise. It was to the point that I wouldn't have been able to diagnose a rod, or a more serious valve train issue. It's a p.i.t.a. of a job, but VERY gratifying to pull into the driveway after my commute and hear nothing but injectors! Knowing that there is oil likely leaking around the chain tensioners is rather disconcerting. There is a lot going on in the top end of these motors, oil pressure & volume are it's friend. Most shops just change the phasers, which would likely quiet it down for a few miles. If the tensioners are the problem (99% of the time they are the reason why the phasers got noisy in the first place) your new phasers will be clacking again real soon. It depends on your ability. I used to turn wrenches for a living prior to blowing out my back. This is a time consuming job, but not terribly complex. I spent around $650-$700 on everything. Mostly from Amazon.com. I've read posts where shops got the better part of $3500 for this job. I believe it assuming OEM parts & labor rates. It took me the whole weekend.
