Hey all!

I have had my 99 XLT for a few months now and just joined the forums to try to figure out a slight dilemma I am having with the entertainment setup in the vehicle...

The car has the stock radio still installed (cassette and all :p ) The previous owner had a flip-down screen installed in the back, and stuck a magnavox dvd player and dc inverter under the seats. The dvd player feeds up to an FM transmitter that is in the dash under the radio...It all works, but I have to flip multiple switches to power it all up, and then there is the dilemma of having to reach behind my seat to mess with DVD's and to control the darn thing for the kids (too young to do it themselves)

So my question is, is there a decent in-dash dvd/radio out there that will allow me to load/control the DVD's from the radio, and have it output video to the flip-down tv in the back? Most of the players I have found play the video on the touch screen, and will not play if not in park...I just want to control it from the front, i never need to watch it. Im down with single din or double din (dont mind modifying dash)

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated!

The clarion NX706 and NX405 (both double din) NZ503 (Single din) all have dual zone and will let you control the rear DVD even when you cant see it.

To minimize scrutiny, I'd email a retailer like Crutchfield and explain you are installing the head unit into a limo, an airplane, an RV, or a boat with an additional monitor elsewhere. That'll way you'd avoid the notion (assumption) that you, the driver, wants to enjoy Lion King while driving 65MPH. Most head units have a defeat to allow video in motion, whether is grounding a certain wire or entering a PIN or code number to enable.

Another consideration, you might look into replacing the overhead unit with a newer, larger one. One that is all-in-one, with a wireless remote that you can control from the front seat. Possibly one with wireless headphones, so that you aren't forced into listening to the same video 800 times, because thats what kids love. You can enjoy listening to whatever, independent of the movie. One that will allow integration of a game console, which the kids will want soon anyway.

Your existing overhead LCD unit, power inverter , and DVD player have some value on the used market. Your stock cassette deck, not so much.

and u can still add a new head unit if u want to connect to the overhead all-in-one and play to each other...that's how I have mine set up...I can play the movie in my pioneer and be seen in the overhead and headrests and I can play the movie in the overhead and be seen in the head unit and the headrest as well

Sorry guys, was looking for an email notification of replies.....just now seeing this xD

Thanks for the suggestions. Honestly with the car being as old as it is, and as in-frequent as I will be driving it, do you have any suggestions for cheaper alternatives to headunits that provide this functionality? Some of the headunits im seeing cost half as much as the vehicle did :p

Thanks again!
