I have a 98 expedition with the 5.4 and have been getting a really bad whining in the radio for quite some time now. It seems to increase/decrease in pitch when I accelerate/slow down. Also every time I roll a window up or down I can hear a little noise in the radio too. There is also a noise through the radio for a second when I turn the headlights on or off. I've read that there is a radio noise capacitor in the ignition circuit, and I would like to check that but I have not been able to locate it. Thanks.

The diagrams don't show a cap in the circuitry for the radio. They do show a set of shielded wires. Normally they will be grounded but the diagram also doesn't show a direct ground for them.
I would check the grounds behind the kick panels. They need to be clean and secure. Any sign of corrosion should be removed. Do not apply a dielectric grease at this connection. All wiring will act as an antenna over a run. It will not hurt to twist two times per inch (cat5 standards I think).

When was the last tune up & plug wire change? The ignition system is the source of the interference - the transmitter.

last plug and wire tune up was about a year ago last summer. the radio noise issue started about 2 months ago after replacing the front passenger window
