i got a 2000 ford expedition with 4.6l, was driving fine, truck sat for couple days went to go to store and when i turned i could tell it was in 4x4, i have the awd mode and 4hi and 4low. put truck in neutral and put brake on and move the turn knob from awd to 4hi and nothing the 4x4 light came on put it in 4low and i could hear it go into 4low, then put it into 4hi i heared it go into 4hi, then move the knob to awd and nothing no noise the 4x4 light shut off but still in 4hi, so i put a new transfer case shift motor in the expedition and the same problem stuck in 4hi, i then unbolted the motor and while i was under the truck had my wife put truck in neutral and switch the 4x4 knob to all the modes and the motor does move for the awd, 4hi,4low, with doing that i know it knob works and every thing run to the transfer case switch motor works and the motor works, what else could it be. looking for it to get this out of 4hi, some one told me most likly a vacuum hose coming off the 2wd hub solenoid or another hose, i just dont know where to find these hoses any ideas what problem may be or what i need to look for. or videos or instructions to find these hose or other problems ... thanks please post resullts.... and note i was in neutral and had brake on, i also drove in reverse for over a block. unhooked the battery nothing, truck was to normal running temps, drove it around town still did not come out! thanks for any help

Pull the fuse and try driving. See if it's still in 4wd. I pull mine because mine hangs as well. I need to do the Brown Wire Mod.

I'm having a similar issue with mine. Same year, 5.4L. Mine disengaged after I turned the vehicle on and then off. My thinking at the moment: If it's an electrical issue, as in the signal to engage and disengage the clutch inside the transfercase is having an issue, then maybe it's time to start checking the wiring, GEMs, etc.

OR,

have you changed the transfercase fluid? I'm wondering if it's a lack of lubrication (old fluid, not enough fluid) that's causing the clutches to not engage (or disengage as it were) properly.

Back to your first post in this thread You do not have 2wd therefore you don't have any vacuum solenoids. You normally wont hear any noise when switching from A4wd to 4 hi as you are already in 4 hi regardless of being in A4wd or 4hi You will have to be in Neutral with your foot on the brake in order to go from 4hi to 4lo and back again and there you will hear the transfer case switch between the two.

The fact that you say the 4X4 light comes on when you switch from A4wd to 4hi tells me that it is shifting between the two

Transfer Case —Automatic Four-Wheel Drive (A4WD)
Features and Operation

The automatic four-wheel drive (A4WD) transfer case uses an electronic shift 4x4 system that allows the operator to choose between three different 4x4 modes. The operator can switch between A4WD and 4WD HIGH modes at any speed. However, to engage or disengage LOW Range, the GEM requires that the vehicle speed is less than 5 km/h (3 mph), the brake is applied, and the transmission is in NEUTRAL.

In A4WD, the generic electronic module (GEM) varies the torque split between front and rear drivelines by controlling the transfer case clutch. Under most conditions, the GEM activates the transfer case clutch at a minimum duty cycle (percentage of time the clutch is turned on) which allows for a slight speed difference between the front and rear driveshafts which normally occurs when negotiating a corner on dry pavement. When the rear wheels are overpowered, the GEM detects this slip condition, and the duty cycle to the transfer case clutch is increased until the speed difference between driveshafts is reduced. In this manner, the GEM can redirect engine torque to the front wheels when the rear wheels lose traction yet still allow operation in the A4WD mode on dry pavement.

When the ABS system is active, the GEM will default to a minimum duty cycle for the transfer case clutch.

Feature Inputs:

Shift range selector switch.
Front and rear output shaft speed sensors (Hall effect sensor output: 11.86 Hz/km/h).
ABS active input (battery voltage when ABS is active, grounded when inactive).
Contact plate position inputs A, B, C, D grounded when closed, open circuit when open.
Feature Outputs:

Solid state clutch relay (pulse width modulated signal: grounded when relay is on, battery potential when relay is off).
Shifting Between A4WD and 4WD HIGH

The operator can switch between A4WD and 4WD HIGH mode at any speed.

Shifting Into/Out of LOW RANGE

When shifting into or out of LOW RANGE, the GEM requires that the vehicle speed is less than 5 km/h (3 mph), the brake is applied, and the transmission is in NEUTRAL.

The Vehicle Does Not Shift Between A4WD and 4WD Modes Properly
4WD mode switch.
Circuitry.
CJB Fuse 23 (10A).
A4WD clutch relay/circuit.
Contact plate sensors A, B, C and D circuits.
Transfer case shift motor/circuit.
Transfer case shift relays.
Transfer case mechanism.
GEM.
GO to Pinpoint Test B .
