If my research on the door sticker in the picture is right, my 2000 EB Expy has a 4R100 tranny. I am beginning to have the clutch shudder on a regular basis and am wondering whats the right fluid to put in it when I change it all out? Mercon V, Mercon VI?

It may cost a bit more, but I highly recommend using a full synthetic fluid like Royal Purple. These full synthetics are mercron V compatible.

Mercon V should be OEM compatible as they have refined these trans fluids over the years. Did mine last year (E4OD) and shifts better than new.

I do HIGHLY recommend the OEM trans filter. I change mine every 25K when trailering, every 50K thereafter and went w/ the oversized Mag-Hytec trans pan.

Thanks for all the replies. I have only looked at 2 places so far and wow mercon V is pricey. Both were by the quart and were $4.50 at Walmart & $6.50 at Oreillys. Surely I can get a better deal if I can find it in the 5 quart jug....but where? It's rare that I ever see more than 5-6 quart bottles at a time most places I go. (had this same problem several years ago when I looked for it when changing the fluid in the 95 F150 I used to have). Ended up going to several Walmarts and bought all they had till I had enough.

Mercon V is the correct fluid for the 4R100. I use Amsoil rather than RP. I have had some issues with RP fluids and their marketing so I made the switch.

Ended up going to multiple stores and bought 18 quart bottles of the same brand of merconV, and a new filter. Was happy to find out the fluid had been changed at least once before because the dipstick plug wasnt in the pan. Was also happy to find nothing more than a little sludge on the magnet. Got her all cleaned up, new filter, topped with the new fluid, and WOW what a difference it made. Shudder was gone immediately, and the shifts are perfect like a brand new tranny. No doubt it was money well spent.
