Hi, I have a 1999 Expedition 4x4, 145K. The truck is the version that doesn't have 2wd so it always is in awd. Well in the last few months I have been getting a noise, somewhat of a rubbing noise when I am pulling away from a stop and the front wheels are turned. If I pull away straight like from a stop light I get no noise but as soon as I pull away and turn the front wheel I get the rubbing or grinding. I am thinking front diff because as the front tires are turned one is traveling a greater distance.
Any ideas on what is going on? I was just thinking of doing the brown wire mod and cuyt that wire for the time being and see if the noise goes away which would support my suspicion as then when pulling away and turning the wheels there wouldn't be any "force" on the front diff-
Thoughts??

What happens when you crank the wheel hard to one direction while stopped and then turn? Like making a hard 90 degree corner. Does the drivetrain feel like it's binding up?

You can also try this. You'll have to verify exactly which fuse, but in the underhood fuse box is a fuse for the 4x4 systm. I think it's 104 or 105 or something. It's a odd-square shaped fuse. Pull that and go for a drive.

Mine was doing what you and I described. I pulled the fuse and it's been good ever since. But since it's summer, I haven't been too concerned with fixing it. I suspect that it's the vacuum control unit on the firewall that's bad- but I haven't fully diagnosed it yet.
