It is possible but 2 seals would have to fail in order for it to happen. One on the transmission and one on the transfer case. If the transmission was losing fluid and the transfer case was gaining fluid.....

I would expect in order for that to happen you would have other issues with the transmission/transfer case combo.

The seals are designed to keep fluid in the respective component. It can pass the from the dry side pretty easily. They have a spring and lip on the wet side.

I have replaced the transfer case fluid with 2 quarts of Motorcraft Transfer Case Fluid (XL-12) since the Motorcraft Mercon V is not recommended for a transfer case( right on the bottle). The 2 quarts filled the transfer case to the point where it just dribbled out the fill hole. I will monitor the transmission fluid level and in a month or so, open the fill plug on the transfer case when it is cold to see if there is more fluid than what I put in. Thank You for the feedback regarding the seals.
