On my third Expedition, currently an '11, and all three had/have the paint issues.

There was talk of Ford honoring a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty on paint. True? Or am I correct in understanding that Ford will do nothing to fix my '11?

Yes you are correct, they will do nothing. My 08 was under premium extended warranty and they still refused to take care of it.

So I went to the salvage yard, bought a replacement deck lid. Some cancer along the bottom edges and inside the lip, from 2013 Ltd Tuxedo Black.
Replaced it and took off my lid, stripped it of all badges rubber wiring to just metal.
Took it to my local Powder Coating expert last week and now waiting for the finished product.

Media strip inside and out to bare metal . Barrier coat of anti tarnish , powder coat black epoxy primer , bake and followed by Tuxedo Black Metal flake Powder coat, bake and
Clear Coating and now under fine sand , compound and buff. Clear Coat leaves the finish with a slight "orange Peel" effect, fine finish wet sanding and compounding will leave it like factory new.

Pick up is next week, pictures of the whole process to follow.
Since the back lid is only up against the side plastic panels, color match is not 100 % critical so I am curious how well it does match. The hood would be next and matching is more critical since it lays up against the fenders for comparison.

My hope is that this is the final answer instead of repeated repairs by dealer designated body shops and money out of my pocket.

Stay Tuned................

That sounds awesome Fischer. I hope it works out well for you. I can't wait to see the pictures.

Aluminium is great and the industry that has made the best use of it is aviation. Auto manufacturers need to follow stardards that are proven and give the customers what they have over paid for. I recommend the engineers in Wichita drive accross town and ask Cessna why and how they do surface prep before paint is sprayed.

This is where I think GM does a better job. Their paints have looked great recently

I agree 100%.

It is clear that Ford does not care about the aluminum corrosion issue that has existed on the Expedition models for years. If the company and its employees cared about the problem - it would have been corrected years ago.

While there I hope Cessna remembers to thank Ford for developing the standard....

My 2010 paint is bubbling on the hood by the latch and on the back tailgate and is now starting to peel. Any advice on getting any of this covered? I will soon be down to bare metel when it peels off the next time it gets washed. This is truly a manufacturing / engineering defect to mix metals without proper finishing.

Time for upgrade? Doubt that will be covered. Maybe an auto body shop can do a new paint job on those two
