They matched the diameter that is all that matters.
Smaller steel wheel is cheaper than an larger aluminum wheel. You’re hard pressed to get a matching spare on anything these days let alone a spare at all.
Many just give you a tube of goo.

But to answer your question my ‘16 came with 18” wheels and a 17” steel spare.

True - but Ford literature and the vehicle window sticker state, “full size spare” - which led me to believe it would be a 20” wheel and tire spare for my 2015 Ford Expedition Limited 4x4.

My 2014EL ... 18" steel matches the other 4 in size.
My 2003XLT ... 17" steel (rusted beyond belief) matches the other 4 in size.

"full size" could mean its full size of "something", didnt say what!

it's like some things that advertise "lifetime guarantee", it breaks - you take it in and they say "not YOUR lifetime, the anticipated lifetime of the product, assuming its been taken care of and etc etc. .... and by the way its past the lifetime of the product obviously since it's busted so go pound salt

22” wheel with CCD. Same spare as you. Don’t really care. I’ve had to use it once. Got my tire fixed and stuffed it back under for next time.

Soon after I bought my new 2015 Ford Expedition Limited 4x4, with the standard 20” road wheels and tires, I lowered and checked the air in the spare (it was grossly overinflated). I realized it was an 18” steel wheel and tire.

I phoned my salesman, and asked him about the spare. He said the factory installed the wrong spare, he would check on it, and order a new spare wheel and tire.

About a week later, he called me and said the 18” spare was correct - even with the 20” standard road wheels.

Even the Ford salesperson had no idea that Ford’s “full size spare” was a different wheel and tire size for the Limited model with the standard 20” road wheels and tires.

Perhaps Ford should include a placard or Information in the vehicle owner’s manual regarding the spare tire matter. However, the printed owner’s manual included with my Expedition had numerous errors.

No wonder the customers are confused.

Full size spare just means “not a donut”. Your diameter is the same size as your normal set, so you could theoretically drive on it for however long and however far as you’d like, which is not the case with a donut. It would be unsightly, but you’re not going to be limited to 50 miles or 50mph.

Literally this. As long as the size of the tire / rim are closely matching the OE tire then its fine. At least its not one of those tiny donuts that say MAX SPEED 10 mph. lol

I recommend putting a cheap cover on the spare. Something like on the jeeps, that covers it. They are prone to rust. FYI. My 1976 Vette had a steel rally rim as a spare, but alloy wheels. This is nothing new. My first car, a 1977 Monte Carlo had a matching Turbine II spare. My Expedition has a steel spare, but with a matching size tire. 265/70/17. It makes no sense what manufactures do. People are confusing Matching spare, to full spare.

The problem with a cover is it just makes more salt and mud and water get trapped and causes even more rust in my climate...
