I'm trying to change brakes on our Expedition. What size allen wrench does it take before I go out and buy one? Thanks Jeff

seeker,

Thanks for the response. Our 05 is definitely allen head. I determined it has to be 9mm because of all the wrenches I've tried. 9mm is an oddball size so I need to order one to do the brakes. Thanks again. Jeff

I think he means a 19mm socket. For some reason, I too remember only have to take 2 larger (19mm?) bolts to take the caliper off.

Unless you're trying to take off the bolts that are under the black dust caps?

I'll check mine tomorrow.

yup 2 19mm bolts to remove the calipers (use 1/2" drive there on there pretty good)

Those 2 bolts remove the caliper and the bracket. You don't need to remove those unless you are changing rotors. Yes, I'm talking about the bolts under the dust caps. I replaced the rotors on the back and the bolts for the caliper bracket took an 18mm socket. Jeff

I saw all the posts about the allen size being a 9mm. Sears, Ace hardware, Advance Auto, AutoZone all have 8mm and then skip to 10mm for individual or sets. But NAPA had a 9mm allen 3/8 drive socket in stock. Got home and started the brake job. And the dang bolt on my 2005 is a 7mm. I had just a 7mm allen wrench, so it took a lot of work and time to get them out last night since it was after the stores had closed to go get the socket drive one. I just wanted to post this for anyone else to see. I wonder if my bolts aren't stock is the reason they weren't 9mm.

If your 2005 is like my first gen 2000, the size is a t45 plus torx not an Allen socket. I initially got mine off with a regular t45, but it fit loose. The plus t45 is right for mine. Might want to crawl behind it and see.
