    Thanks for this, and I think you are correct. When I have the window down I can hear the air noise much greater and seems to indicate it is one of the air pipes that I removed when replacing the water pump. I will get back under the hood this weekend and check it over!

    Just trued a couple of tests which were recommended before changing the phasers, disconnect the alternator and disconnect the VCT solenoid. When the alternator is disconnected the check engine light goes out and stays out, it appears that the error codes are linked to diodes in the alternator too...
