Here is the problem. When the SUV gets a little warm... It starts this knocking. (See video)
It sounds like its coming from the item in the pictures / video.

Thanks for any help!

Welcome!!!!!!

is that the heat shield? when it cools.. can you move anything even just a small wiggle? sometimes it seems tight but the heat will loosen it.. i had oil pan gasket replaced and cross member is loose just enough to rattle at certain rpms or speeds... so i just blow by that section on the speedo!!:D also..have any work done recently???

not a mechanic here.. but have yo had anyone rev the motor to see if the noise dissipates as the rpms get higher? just trying to narrow things down...

The heat shield seems very tight. It sounds like it's coming from inside the catalytic converter. (I think that's what it is...)

I think it's coming from inside the cat. You could try tapping the pipe, not the heat shield, with a rubber mallet with the engine off. See if you can duplicate the noise.

Thanks everyone! It's the cat... is this an easy job for a guy who does alternators, starters and other minor repairs?

Removing a cat is truly a nightmare if you want to go the route of unbolting the sized screws. Best bet is to cut it off and replace it with a new cat that is a weld on type. If you have a sawzaw and a welder you can do it yourself given you've already bought a new cat already otherwise no leave it to a muffler shop to do that repair.

You can either purchase a new cat over the Internet for whatever price you can find it for or call your local muffler shop and get quotes on the estimated repair price including a new cat.

I was quoted $250 recently to replace one of my cats by a local shop they wanted to cut and weld and they provided the new cat with that price, just to give you an idea... My truck is an 05 so expect to be around that price range.

Good luck

I think mine is rattling too. I just had cam phasers/chains/tensioners replaced. I hope that's what it is. If the converter has broken stuff inside would that make the exhaust sound like an engine miss?
