Hi, I just purchased a 2006 expy and I'm trying to get ready to tow. I have the 7 pin connector, so I assume that means I got the HD tow package. I ordered a wiring harness for the trailer breaks and a P2 controller. Found the video showing the easy installation.

I think that's all I need to do to be ready to roll. Am I missing anything?

The fuse and charging system should already be connected to the 7 pin plug right?

Yeah you should be good to go once you get those in. Install is super easy, hardest part is finding the best spot to install it.

That should be about it- I am envious of you, wish my 06 had the HD tow package! I would also recommend purchasing a ScanGauge II which can plug into your OBD2 port, and help you monitor things like coolant temp, trans temp and many other things important to the health of your truck while towing. It is not critical, but I love mine and if towing in steep grades or high altitudes is a common thing, I would highly recommend.

Gafftaper You know what they say about assumption
That it is the mother of all ****ups
First go to ford etis and enter your vin number as that will give you a readout of all that was on the expy when built You will see if you have the HD package or not.

I would also check to make sure that the fuses and relay have been installed Don't assume anything

Verify that its all there

The brake controller is a straight plug-in to the harness connector under the dash by the steering column. 10 minutes and whatever screws are needed to mount the controller unit.

Ford provided the 4 pin trailer connector standard, and if you got the towing package, then the 7 pin adapter was installed by plugging into the 4 pin connector, then connecting the two unconnected wires bundled in the rear by the connector. The 4 pin connector provides the light control, and the other wire provides the brake control from the unit you're installing under the dash. There is also a need to feed a 12 volt supply through the connector that charges your camper batteries while you're traveling, and possibly back-up lights on the trailer if you have them. You may have to add fuses and a relay to the electric distribution panel. The owner's manual shows you which is the towing relay and fuses. They're not expensive if missing.

I just went through this with a 2005 Expedition I just set up. In my case, the stock 4 pin connector was corroded, so the 7 pin connect wouldn't work properly. I just installed a new combination 4/7 pin socket which corrected the problems. I added the relay and fuses, so the only thing left is the 12 volt feed to the trailer when I get time.

The towing package also provides a radiator that has more capacity for transmission oil cooling, and a lower differential gear ratio. Running the VIN number as previously suggested, or getting a build sheet will get you additional information. Good luck!

17 days ago the OP joined the Forum Posted one post and hasn't been back since Its a waste of time to reply to people like that. I am sure his question was important to him at that time. But his lack of activity is so typical of many new members.

I had a similar situation on my 2005 and ended up replacing the stock 7 pin socket with a new one since the stock 4 pin to 7 pin connection was damaged by road salt. I had to add fuses in the panel to get the circuits fired up. I am still looking for the connector into which the 12 volt charging line to the 7 pin socket gets connected. Haven't found it. It's said to be on the frame somewhere.

It should be in the area under the floor between the drivers door and passenger door along the frame rail
