there was tapping noise coming from the engine and I had a guy from autozone look at it. said it sounded like a timing issue because he has the same engine in his f150 and I verified this and saw the same engine in his truck. he has rebuilt his engine and he can do my timing for 250 plus parts. we found out the camshaft was all chewed up and decided to replace the passenger side head as well as timing kit. replaced all gaskets as we went along. the truck would not start at first then we unplugged camshaft position sensor and it started but sounds real rough. bought a new sensor and no change. engine just shakes with no acceleration.

Ok.......
1st question is - what chewed up the cam/head?
2nd question - what condition is the other head in?
3rd - what happens if the cam sensor is plugged in while the engine is running?

the other head has no issues. camshaft is all intact. metal is still shiny like new. the bad one was worn down possibly caused by 2 rocker arms that had fallen down. when the cam sensor is plugged in the engine stalls out.

Look at it from a logical perspective:
1) engine was running but had a tap
2) head swapped & new timing kit
3) now engine doesn't start after repair
4) disable cps & engine runs but runs like crap
5) connect cps and engine dies

Trouble is related to the work performed. It can be as simple as a pinched wire or as bad as the cam is out of time. If the cam is out it should show up as low compression on that cylinder bank. (Hope it isn't this)

When he changed the timing chains did he lock the cams in place? Once the chains were on, did he rotate the engine at least 4 revolutions to check for interference?

Where did you source the replacement head?

Also, sometimes we reply quickly other times it may take a day or two - it depends if we are busting knuckles on projects.

Ok. Thanks for your advice and info. I'm still going to take it to a shop and see what they say.
