Noise from engine bay

Hello,

Lately the Expo has been very quiet, nothing out of the ordinary as far as noises go, Friday before last the "grindy" or "can of marbles" noise started.


Like I said, it just all started Friday before last, drove it home Friday morning and she was nice and quiet, no rattle.

She's slightly overdue for an oil change and is a tad heavy.

I also recorded a video of engine noise while instead the cab driving but sadly almost all you can make out is the annoying exhaust leak it has.


Mostly worried this is going to be related to the timing chain, but unsure. I haven't taken the belt of yet and started it up to see if the noise continues, need to do that.

What do you guys think?

I'm gonna guess the alternator is going bad .... they kinda sound like that just before they grenade .... you can take the belt off and run it for a minute and see if the noise disappears with the belt off. Use caution for overheating if you run it too long, as your fan and water pump will not be operating. Do it when the engine is cooled down anyway. You can probably even take the belt off and with the engine not running spin the alternator pulley and the other tension pulley and you'll be able to tell which one is causing the noise.

With the belt off, the culprit pulley will sound like a worn out roller skate. Or for the young group out there crunchy marbles.

Sounds aren'the the same in the op's video and the phasers video. The op's video reminds me of loose chains.

I've watched numerous Cam Phasers video's and one thing that seems to be a common noise is a diesel like sound, mine is more of a rattle, but in any event, have an update:

Removed the belt, no strange noise from the alternator, best I can tell anyway, does seem I have a bad pulley, video's below.

Now that you have checked with the belt off and still have the sound, that points to an internal engine issue. At this point I no longer run an engine until the source is found. Should the timing chain tensioner(s) fail, the slack in the chains can allow a drastic change in valve timing with the result of having to rework the heads.
If the sound you are hearing is really at the rear of the engine that is usually a broken flex plate and sounds like nuts in a can.
Whatever you do - don't Rev the engine. It is now time to "bust your knuckles".

The noise, when standing near the vehicle, is the loudest when standing directly in front of the grille.

Was really hoping it was the alternator..... :(

Yeah optimistically it would've just been the alternator.... but now that sounds like the timing chain guide(s) .... How many miles on the motor ?
