The motor cranks, but won't start. The THEFT light flashes rapidly with the key in the RUN position, and if left alone for a couple minutes, it flashes once, then pause, then 3 times.

I read somewhere that means "Code 13" and that it means key failure. I have an aftermarket key from walmart that's been working for a few years. The key body says "Replaceable Battery Inside" which there isn't.

It's the only programmed key I have.

I read to leave it on RUN, and wait 15 minutes AFTER the THEFT light stops blinking, which takes like 2 minutes. Then turn the key off, pull it out, put it back in and try to start. That didn't work either.

I also can't get my OBD Bluetooth dongle to connect, but I'm not sure if that's related. I thought maybe I could scan and get a code to tell me what the PATS system error was.

I've read several ways to bypass PATS, but all seem to involve a known good key. I only have the one key, and I don't know if it's good or not.

I need to get this truck running again, and towing it to the dealer is not financially an option.

Is there a way to test if the key did lose the program, or if perhaps it's something else?

Some more info that might help. I do have the door keypad, and the remote FOBs. Using those to lock and unlock hasn't had an effect.

I also did the "turn key from off to run 8 times" which is how I programmed the remotes before. This is supposed to make the locks cycle so you know it's in programming mode. I cycle the key, but the locks never cycle.

Try disconnecting the battery for about 20-30 minutes and then reconnect and try to start.

Can't do no harm if the key lost its program

If it does start then get yourself a blank chipped key and program it Your year only needs one programed key in order to program spare keys

Thanks for the reply,
I did leave the battery disconnected for 20 hours, I forgot to mention that. Also, mine is 2000, which I think needs 2 keys.

Bring your 2 keys to a locksmith and try to have him make a duplicate and explain to him your problem. If your new key still wont work, then you may need to replace the transponder key ring on the ignition switch which you can obtain from your local pull-a-part.

Visual Inspection Chart
Mechanical Electrical
  • Ignition lock cylinder
  • Encoded ignition key (PATS key)
  • Use of non-encoded ignition key (key without the molded plastic head, non-PATS key)
  • Use of a non-programmed encoded ignition key
  • Central junction box (CJB) Fuses: under dash
    • Fuse 2 (5A)
    • Fuse 6 (5A)
    • Fuse 30 (30A)
  • PATS transceiver
  • Connectors
  • Ignition switch

also check fuse #3 under dash for the obd ll connector this fuse is also for the cig lighter so if that isn't working then the obd port wont work

Code 13 also said to check the transponder coil and wiring. And try it again with only the key, no keyring attached.
