Hi everyone, first time posting after being helped so many times by this forum. I've recently got into car mechanics and have been doing all the maintenance and repairs myself. Just recently, the repairs are going over my head and I need some advice from professionals.

Since the day I bought the truck, it has a weird knock whenever I come to a stop. The knock is localized in the front end (wheel or engine compartment? idk). The knock will sound when the vehicle is about to come to a stop and no longer sounds when the vehicle is stopped. It only sounds once when the truck is close to stopping.

I tried stopping with the truck on neutral and that eliminates the knock somehow. I also noticed that starting at 0 mph in 1st gear, every time I gently press the throttle and let go, the knock will sound. This is only in 1st gear and is not present when shifting to 2nd gear and onward.

I really hope that I don't have a transmission failure but am prepared for the worst.

I bought the truck on auction (retired police cruiser 2008 Ford Expedition) with 97K miles.
Changed spark plugs, transmission fluid + filter, transfer case fluid, front + rear differential fluid after purchasing and this problem still persists now at 121K miles.

A lesser problem... I noticed recently at 70 mph my steering wheel would rock and vibrate like crazy. Both front tires and rear tires are new and identical. I replaced all 4 strut + spring assemblies. Last week replaced both inner and outer front tie rods. Problem still persists. I noticed with 1 front tire off the ground, there is movement at the 3 and 6 direction. No clunking, just smooth movements in and out about 1 inch even after brand new inner/outer tie rods. ?????

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much,
Maxwell

Your first problem might be a bad engine mount or transmission support.

On your second problem:
Have the wheels balanced, check wheel bearing retaining nut for proper torque, check steering rack housing for looseness and check if you tightened the inner tie rod properly.

I read somewhere else that my 1st problem may be due to Ford's intermediate slip yoke. Does that sound right? I will check the engine mount, where would I find the trans support?

I just got my wheels aligned and balanced 2 weeks ago. I'll check wheel bearing retaining nuts for proper torque, though the truck is really rusty and almost every bolt is seized. I did notice that while I was moving the wheel at the 3 - 9 position, the steering rack? was moving. The rod that screwed onto the inner tie rod had inward and outward movement.
