had the SAME problem with mine on friday. went to put the key in everything worked. turned the key and nothing! i was like figures! it ended up my negative terminal was so green that there was no connection. so i cleaned it off and my dad found some dielectric grease that he had. so i gotta put that on this week.
Wondering if this is the same problem I am currently having with my 2007 Expedition. It won't start or crank or take a jump. But if it sits over night - it starts right up. This has happened for the last six weeks. And I am trying to track down the issue. My wife drove the ExP to work yesterday and i told her it should crank over after 9 hours sitting at work and it DID NOT TURNOVER. Went down this morning and it started right up. What is the problem?

You are having an electrical issue on the starting circuit. In order to troubleshoot(ts) it you will need a digital multimeter or test light. If you don't have either they can be sourced from various online vendors or locally. Don't get the cheap $10 "one hung low" specials from China, get a decent brand with better quality.

When you are ready to go let us know and we will walk you through the ts steps.

Stampp11127 - I found the link on this page that appeared to be a perfect match (2007 Expedition randomly not starting) and then it terminated just at the good part. I will continue to search but......

2007 Expedition with 230,000 miles. Original starter & cabling. Never in an accident. Never had remote system. Factory stock. Battery is good and the terminals have been cleaned. Parked yesterday evening and won't start this morning. I hear the in-dash relay activate (click) then nothing. Tried starting in neutral, nothing. Tapped on starter in case it had a dead spot but that did nothing.

I would like your steps to follow. I have a Fluke Mtr and an electrical background so I'm ready........ Thanks

If you are talking about the 2007 I was helping a member with I'm waiting on him to post results of testing the diode. He either has a failing diode or a break somewhere in the harness for the control circuit. The way it is wired the pcm provides a ground to the control side of the starter relay when a few conditions have been met. Since the harness goes all over it would take hours to get access to all of it just to test it. The days of simple starter circuits are long gone. We ended up adding in a second starter switch that bypassed all the electronic razzle dazzle until the cause was found.

1) Check the battery voltage while trying to start. You should see a drop.

2) Check fuse 27 in the smart junction box - see pdf.

3) Pull the starter relay in the box above the fan shroud. You should have power on pin 86 when the ignition switch is in "start". I no power here there is a problem on this side of the circuit.

4) Same relay, jump pins 30 to 87 in the socket with a heavy gauge jumper wire and the starter should spin. Make sure the trans is in park as this will bypass all safety features and can start in any gear if the ign switch is in "run".

5) If the starter fails to spin then perform the voltage drop tests on the starter circuit load side.

Sorry for the delay gentlemen. I have been on travel and I did not have time to work on the Expedition until 10/29 (Saturday). I went through the check list. All fuses were good. The relays were good with the same coil impedance. I do believe that the power to the Start relay was on Pin 85, not Pin 86. I jumped the relay and nothing. Replaced the starter with a new one and her trusty ride is back in service. Just in time for the last leg of my business trip out of town. 235k miles on the original starter isn't bad.

Thank you for your help.
