Hi Everyone,

I recently bought a 16 Expedition Platinum and love it! It was a nice upgrade over my 15 Grand Cherokee Overland in both size and features.

One thing is driving me crazy...when the Expy is locked and I stand behind it with the keys in my pocket...the rear hatch will not open when I press the handle. I need to unlock it with my key fob first.

I know a lot of Fords have the "kick" feature which I didn't think the Expy had. I've checked all the settings and can't figure out how to get it to sense my key when I'm close by. It's very inconvenient to dig my keys out of my pocket when my hands are full.

Any help?

Thanks!
Jay

My fob has a liftgate button, but no proximity feature. Sounds like a design feature that needs to be fixed.

I've actually never seen a vehicle with a proximity feature on the trunk. Unlike the doors, when the trunk is unlocked it opens, so I imagine manufacturers intentionally avoid using the proximity feature on it. I typically just pop mine with the liftgate button before I have anything in my arms.

I have a 2015 Expediton Limited 4x4, purchased new.

The proximity key will only function on the LF door - and not the other three doors or rear hatch (stupid design....).

I also have a 2014 Impala 2LTZ with the proximity key - it works on all four doors and the trunk. A very nice feature. The FOB will cause all four door to lock when you walk away from the vehicle (if programmed by the owner).

Ford cheaped-out on the redesigned 2015 & 2016 Expeditions with the function (or lack of function) for the upper-level proximity key system.

Interesting; I have never seen a vehicle where it works on the trunk. I drove a lot of 2015/16 models (Lexus, Ford, Mazda, Nissan, Toyota) last year as loaners thanks to the quality craftsmanship of Ford's luxury features and none had a proximity feature for the trunk. I did not drive any GMs though.

Thanks for all the comments. It's crazy how a small feature like that could make such a big difference but it really was convenient. I guess I was really spoiled in the GC.

Jeep also gives you free access to u connect to auto start your car from anywhere in the world and unlock/lock doors. With Ford you need to get something installed by the dealership and pay for that service, right?

Nothing like that free from Ford, but I would have it done aftermarket. Don't let the dealership do anything that isn't under warranty. You'll pay 4x more and get service worth 100x less.

Yes, you are correct. 2015+ Expedition owners can have this installed:

http://www.fordremoteaccess.com/en/
https://accessories.ford.com/aerial-asy-10667.html

Reviews of the app speak for themselves. There is a $49 yearly fee that is often promotionally waived or mail-in-rebate refunded, and dealers often deeply discount the system itself at the time of sale. But it won't open your liftgate and still requires that all elusive free hand to use.

Although not yet available on Expedition, SYNC Connect comes with 5 years free service. You can lock/unlock, start, change the interior temperature, view vehicle gauges on the app, and schedule auto starts in the future. Still won't open the lifegate though.
