Started making a higher pitched humming/howling noise yesterday and my mechanic tracked it to the cats. He thinks they're starting to clog. Unfortunately I'm in the people's republik of kalifornia so not only do I have to have the CARB certified cat, I have to have the correct engine family code stamped into the cat. My engine family # is 8FMXT05.44E6. Appears that particular cat is not offered at all aftermarket and only through the stealership at the ripe price of $3,700+ for the pair. Two questions:

1. Any ideas on where to get the correct cats at a cheaper price?
2. What's the difference in the engine family numbers? The CARB certified cats I find online are engine family #8FMXT05.45AB.

Did your mechanic do an exhaust backpressure test? This is a confirmatory test for bad cats. Also cats can be cleaned if they haven't melted down.
