Cost of vehicle operation has nearly NOTHING to do with MPG.... mostly vehicle price and service costs

Example: You run a $30k Prius for 200k miles, and your cost per mile of JUST paying down that Prius....will be approximately the cost per mile of putting gas into an Expedition

it's just one of the last places to squeeze a few bucks savings out

I paid $3000 for my '03 Expedition. I can buy a whole lot of gas at 14 mpg before I pay for the price of a Prius. Another plus, I made it to work every day recently when Portland was shut down from a little snow storm.

I don't think I'll drive an ecobox again in my life. A Toyota Yaris recently came across the center divider of a highway and ran into the side of my wife's '00 Explorer. It caught on the rear axle and spun into the Toyota Tercel behind my wife. No one was hurt. The two Toyotas were destroyed and had to be flatbedded away. We put a spare tire on the rear where the Yaris had torn a chunk out of the wheel and drove home. The Explorer is a total because it has no book value but it's still a running driveable vehicle!

wow, even the 2017 with Ecoboost motor only gets 15 city / 20 highway. Horrible! My '99 gets 13/18. That only represents a 10-15% fuel economy improvement. The Ecoboost makes 75 more torques though. Ford should have been putting diesels in all these large trucks all along

What's the weight difference between a 2017 & 1999 expys?

According to Google...the '99 4WD weight is 5,177 lb

According to Google, the '17 4WD weight is 5,789.

an add of 612 pounds

I was a bit surprised if this is accurate. I would have thought the V6 even with the turbos and other adds would have weighed less than the 5.4 V8

I expect the IRS and subframe in the back is a good portion of that as well.

Plus lots more electronics and electric motors and sound deadening and... yeah.

Our 2015 Expedition EL Limited 4WD Ecoboost was getting over 20MPG recently, the highest reading I got on the Lie-O-Meter was 23MPG after about 100 miles on cruise. All highway with little traffic and on cruise control at 70MPH. Finished the trip (last leg was getting home in town, with lights and frequent stops) at 21MPG. I was pretty astounded, coming from a 2005 Expedition EB 2WD that could barely muster a legit 18MPG in ideal conditions. Even our mid-size Acura MDX didn't get better MPG (usually around 20). Pretty impressed with this bus.

All of the manufacturers would have loved to use a diesel but the emission regs for our weight class ( I think it's under 9,000lb gross but don't hold me to that) won't allow it with current technology (or maybe it's as much cost but it works out the same). Hopefully that will change soon.
