They are worn out. I replaced mine with a wooden handle from a heavy duty shovel. Hasn't failed me yet.

Now THAT'S funny!

You can pick up those cylinders cheap on fleabay....just do your research! I bought a set for my SLK 5 years ago and they work perfectly regardless of the temps....I think I paid 14 bucks each...........Mercedes wanted $189 parts only....for ONE! Nuts

If you use a wooden handle, do you keep the handle in the truck at all times?

Frankly I'd replace it. If you knock the wooden handle out, the hood could clunk down on you, or even slam shut- possibly bending the heck out of itself.

I used a wooden handle on another car before until I bumped it with my arm and boom there goes a concussion!

Struts are worn out, replace them in pairs, shouldn't be more than $60 for both.

Plus it looks cheap and ragity with a wood piece holding good open.

I just bought some "BOXI" brand struts on Amazon for like $25/2pcs. Fit and function PERFECT!!! Can't comment on how well they'll hold up, but for the price I'm very impressed.

I had the same problem when it got cold with the hood coming down. I ordered the supports that day for $25. I put them in and they work great. You should reconsider your wooden stick decision. It's only inviting a bump on the head. Another thing is when you sell the truck the buyer isn't going to be too impressed with a broom handle. Seems penny wise and pound foolish. Spend the $28. Just my opinion.
