Been thinking about this on my 2000 Expy that i upgraded to a 5.4 last summer. Want more power of course...

Seen some write ups with turbo in engine compartment, but it looks like a lot more work than a rear mount with exhaust work, intercooler, etc.

Not looking for huge boost numbers, since engine is stock, 5-6 psi, and from what I understand, don't absolutely need an intercooler because of the location, tubing, etc.

I know STS used to make some model specific, not sure they are in business any more

If anyone has any experience, ideas, thoughts, would appreciate it...

Its been done on trucks in the past, not sure where I saw pics of it. It was a 2 turbo setup. But, i believe they still used an intercooler and had a dedicated small radiator under the back where the spare tire is with a fan on it to keep turbos cool. Should be plenty of room to run the intercooler up front.

May have to use an electric oil pump in a recirculating system for lubrication as most turbos are gravity scavenged back to oil pan.

Here are some links for fleabay to give you some ideas...not sure how competitive the pricing is though: I MAKE NO CLAIMS TO KNOW THE QUALITY OF THESE EITHER!!

fwiw..I owned two older Expy's with the 5.4 engine. While it was beast, I never felt that it was built to be bulletproof like a 350 chevy for instance. Driven normally, it will last a quarter million miles but I'm not sure how it would do if you began loading the crank bearings & heads. I seem to remember about a guy that installed a NOS kit and it made the headgasket issues even worse.

If you do install the turbo, post up about it. I restored a factory turbo bike a few years back and it's a blast to ride. I didn't realize how much I DIDN'T know about turbos' until I had a turbo guru take me under his wing....

Those snails really are engineering and mathmatical marvels! I learned quite a bit with the Subaru (some of it the hard way) and have barely scratched the surface. Best thing I ever did was upgrade to a twin ball bearing turbo (p&p VF48 with increased billet inducer, basically a Blouch twin).

I would LOVE to do a turbo build on a 5.4, but to be honest the power I require is low end torque monster, not a high HP tire smoker.

In for future results.

Yes, they are amazing devices. I was shocked when I learned that my tiny turbo on my Yamaha spun at 212,000 rpm....yes 212 THOUSAND rpm...the shaft sits in an oil bearing to allow that kind of speed. They have some new, variable vane turbos that are used to help reduce the dreaded "turbo-lag" but I really like Fords solution they employed on the Ecoboost series. By reducing the header sections, they effectively speed up the velocity so that the turbos are always spinning nearly fast enough to create boost...they have virtually eliminated any lag at all. Very effective engineering.

the high tech turbo setups are going to give you a lot more then a rear exhaust setup. Even if only 5 psi, the time it will take to spool up and build that kind of pressure is going to be barely worth it. Let me know what you get though, I could be wrong

You would likely get much more than 5 PSI....and as we see in Fords solution that I alluded to earlier, there are ways to minimize the turbo-lag. The problems that would pop up would be the head bolt strength, crankshaft strength, crank bearings, rod strength and intake manifold strength.....Turbo'ed engines have a tendency to detonate much easier at high boost but that might be controlled by the computerized ignition, otherwise you would have to install knock sensors. Yamaha made two version of the 650 engine...turbo and not-turbo and all the things I listed above were strengthened in the turbo version (except the intake manifold)

Turbo would be nasty... I do recall that STS had went under a while back. Seems it was sold, by the original owner, and the new owners ran it into the ground. I read recently, last few months, that the original owner had bought it back. He said he got the company and their inventory and was in the process of re-launching. Here's the site:

theres not much info on that site. What kind of gains at what price are expected?

I only listed the site to show that STS is coming back. As for gains and price, I can't say.
