I changed out the radiator today. The radiator itself was a FoMoCo radiator- not sure if original or a replacement.

I had been smelling coolant for awhile but never found a leak. With the upper air diverter in place, I couldn't see the small leak on both sides where the fins meet the end tank.

I got the replacement at Advance Auto. It was listed as a "Car Quest" radiator but the box said Premier1. Made in China. Roughly $200 before using Speed Perks and a discount code that drove the price down to about $140. Seems like a good quality replacement. Also replaced the lower radiator hose. I watched a few videos on how difficult it is to remove so I figured it was smart to replace it while I was in there.

I also cleaned out the expansion bottle. There was some nasty sediment in there. There was also a bunch of sediment in the radiator.

After I was done, I took apart the old radiator and found the transmission cooler. I got to say, I'm not impressed.

Getting the 6.0L diesel cooler (which is about as wide as the radiator) seems like a smarter deal all the time.

Funny thing is my coworker just asked me about getting a bigger cooler to keep good care of trans. What exact one did you get? Where there any other modifications to make it fit?

Also interested to see how it works and how you mounted. I used the TruCool 40k cooler without the bypass on my F150, and was thinking of the same upgrade for the Expedition, but now I'm definitely going to wait.

About 2 summers ago i replaced the factory aux cooler with a slightly larger Hayden cooler. What you see above is just the transmission cooler that is integrated into the radiator.

The 6.0L diesel cooler can be bought off Rock Auto (it's a Dorman unit). I haven't done it (yet).

There's a transmission guy on ford-trucks.com that assures everyone that the 4r100 can easily take temps over 200 degrees all day long. I've lost a transmission to heat (different car) and I'd rather not repeat it. The 4r100 is thermostatically controlled so over cooling shouldn't be a concern.

I think I know who you're talking about, and he's definitely wrong. I'll leave it there to be polite.

The TruCool has worked remarkably well. My average temp now is 150, and haven't had any issues since.

For the last several months, I've had a noise from my truck: when I shut the door, at cold idle.... It was a metal on metal squeaking. I finally crawled under the truck and found the exhaust pipe clamp just behind the cats was no longer holding tight and allowing the 2 slip fit pipes to move against each other.

So I got a new clamp.

In the box was also a muffler and tail pipe:

The annoying squeaking sound is gone and there is a subtle rumble to go along with it- nothing too aggressive, no droning.

Here's a half-assed pic of the tailpipe tip. The piping after muffler is 3" and the tip is a little bigger.

I'm not super happy with the fitment. The axle-back is clamped to the muffler but it doesn't look like it's holding on by much. And the muffler isn't as far forward as it could be.

I had the axle-back come loose today. It actually sounded pretty cool when it did. I put it back on and got a few more turns on the clamp.

Even after I added the larger Hayden cooler, I've still seen trans temps around 200 degrees on a hot day (usually with the AC on). And that's measured through the OBDII port- so I'm guessing that's in the pan or in the torque converter.

Oh wow.

This is what I used:

Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/121997646683

So far so good, and I wish I had bought it earlier.
