Creamy coolant residue?

While working on a motor swap I found the rear intake water passages to be lined with a peanut butter like residue. The motor has been sitting for years and thinking/hoping the coolant sits towards the back while not running? It was a bit dark when draining the fluids but didn't notice anything suspicious at the time and the front passages look clean.

The much higher mileage motor I pulled does not have this residue.

I'm a newb and wondering if anyone can help me on this?

Classic example of oil/water(coolant) mix. Check the oil in the crankcase. If there isn't any in the pan run your finger in the drain hole and see what is at the bottom of the pan. Also take a look the the intake of the water pump for the same goop.

Thanks, I'll be back down there this weekend to mess with it and planning to pull the pan off anyway (to look for plastic from the cam chain guide, saw a small chuck broke off).

I know the inlet where the thermostat is has a little bit of bright white powder but that seemed normal, especially since it was sitting for so long. I'll look at the waterpump too.

Since you're pulling the pan forget the wp. What is in the pan will tell the story aslong as the oil wasn't changed to hide the problem. You may consider pulling one of the bearing caps to see the condition of the bearing. Coolant and oil mix destroys bearings in short order.

A look at the plugs could tell if it lost head gasket and was parked also.

That peanut butter crap comes from emulsification, so it ran to mix it

So, the oil in the pan seems normal to me. The pan did have a little bit of really dark brown residue in a spot or 2. I might need to find someone who has experience and take the pan to them to look. I pulled the WP anyway and it looks clean and fluid that was remaining was clean and green.

I've attached pictures of the passage ways I am talking about.

I didn't pull the plugs, what might I see?

That looks more like a leak sealer has been added to bandaid a coolant leak. The junk we were talking about earlier is slimy milk chocolate goo.

What I don't get is the front passages are clean as a whistle, as is the water pump....
