Or get new plugs that have more threads and tighten them more than the original factory spec.

Or you could always drop in a VTEC.

Ford/Motorcraft modified new spark plugs, with slightly different threads. The threads grab deeper into head. Are you using Motorcraft Plugs? Always change plugs with motor cold and do not over tighten. A head change is more practical than a motor swap. However, there are kits, to repair damage threads or let the dealer do it.

What did you torque the plugs to?

My 2v 5.4 has 212k on it and this has never happened in the vehicles life. She is purring like a kitten actually.

Actually you want the engine WARM / operating temp when you install new plugs on a 5.4 & then torque them to spec. By warming the engine you are expanding the aluminum that makes up the head- this makes the hole BIGGER so when you torque the plug and then the engine cools- the plug is actually tighter than it was when you installed it.

AS THE ENGINE WARMS (if you do it the way I am telling you), the plug maintains factory spec torque. The is no way you will lose a plug.

If you are installing plugs with the engine cold, that is probably why you lose them (although I've only heard of that happening one time before). Because when the engine gets warm- those plugs are no longer at factory torque spec. They are LOSE because the head has expanded.

EX, Ford Tech bulletin TSB 08-7-6, recommends, room temp, to prevent breakage and thread damage

you want it cold

when the engine is built on the assembly line, the head is cold when the plugs are installed. They don't preheat the head and plugs to install them.

When the head heats up yes it expands, but the threads also change their dimension (from the expanding metal) its not just the hole that changes size

this can cause galling and other problem in the threads if you try pulling a plug out while the engine is hot

also remember that the spark plug metal is hot as well and is changing its dimensions as well and at a different rate then the head since its not aluminum. So the threads may not be exactly as they are when they are cold so this adds to the problem.

always follow the manufacturer's recommendations.
