chock the front wheels

get a floor jack and lift the rear axle off the ground by putting the jack under the pig. Just enough to get the tires off the ground

try it then

on that switch do the brake lights work? If so its aint the problem...

On my 97 once upon a time a wire broke in the harness under the left side of the dash. that told the truck the brakes were on. Hence it wouldnt come out of park unless i did it in neutral with the key on acc. Be careful on an incline in case im wrong. Awful pain in the rear to find and fix.

Try This:

Hit the brakes have someone look at the tail lights. No Brake lights equal bad brake switch. There is a metal contact inside the switch that breaks.

Easy fix about 5 - 10 minutes and $20 - $25 part.
  • Pull the harness
  • Pull the pin cover if there is one
  • Pull the pin
  • Slide it off
  • Don't lose the bushing if there is one
  • Reassemble.

Good Luck

I knew the brake light switch would not fix it

did you try jacking up the ass end like I suggested?
No but I did roll it forward to take the pressure off the parking pin
