Ive done many rear main seal jobs in my day but never a 5.4L ford. Looking at a fsm I see reference to not only a rear main seal but a part called an Oil Slinger, that mates to the rear main seal. FSM says to replace both the seal and the slinger. I see that main seal every where but no mention of an oil slinger not even at ford oem sources. Has anyone done a rear main on a 5.4 and can enlighten me more on the topic? Thanks.

Chief,

I have been looking too. Not much in the line of help. It to me appears to be a part of the stock oil seal.

My opinion would be to order one from your fav auto parts store and see what you get.

Good luck!

A friend of mine who has played with the 5.4 says the sling is not part of the rear main seal and don't worrie about it. If the engine died catastrophically then a tear down would require an inspection but less than likely a replacement.

So... hope this helps.

Thanks for the input. I have found some info on the F150 forum on the topic. The parts are actually 2 separate items, the seal and the slinger. Seal facing inward toward the crank and the slinger mounted facing the Flywheel, the two mounted back to back. Some posts say that several do not even use the slinger, remove it and not replace. But what I have found are the following OEM part #s.
seal = F4AZ-6701-A $17
Slinger = F65Z-6310-4 $9

As I'm pulling the drivetrain to fix these leaks so while at it resealing everything rear of the rear main. I found these through FordPartsGiant

I had ordered all of the parts when I posted my last reply and have them in hand. I have a 2 post lift and a stage transmission Jack so have all the nice stuff to get the job done. But have been working too much the last few weeks. I started yesterday eve by removing both drive shafts, drained the transfer case and the transmission. Was hoping to get the transfer case out this eve but once again did not get home till around 6 and have to get up at 4. I plan to hopefully get it all done this weekend.

Very good. Hope it all works out. Let us know what you find out on the parts and how they install.

Or maybe I'm just asking for me. Lol
