Rear shock help needed 2000 expedition Awd

I recently changed front shocks to a Gabriel brand gas charged shocks..

I'm definitely feeling more sounds and stuff, maybe due to the elevated ride height in the front...

My main issue is:
Rear shocks to balance the car out...

My buddy asked me " does your truck have air ride?"...

"Idk" was my reply..

Does anyone have knowledge on a 2000 Ford expedition (4.6l 281 4awd) and if it has air ride?
If so, what's the process to replace the rear shock to a gas charged one to match the front?
Tips & suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Look under the rear bumper where the axle is. Are they giant air bags or coils going from your axle to your truck?

That will answer your question, buy shocks accordingly.

I'm thinking you don't as you swapped shocks in the front without issue. The front would have air shocks as well.

Anyone every reduced the height of a 2000 Expedition using simple coil spring pull downs? I changed out the air system with a conversion kit and it rides a bit too high. Would just like to pull it down about 3". I know they make full kits for that but I just replaced the whole setup and the fronts only have coil over shocks but the back has a full coil spring.

shocks do nothing for ride height. Its a common misconception

All they are for is dampening the action of the coil spring.

You could take the shock completely out and it wont change the ride height.

Of course you could not do that with the strut assembly in these vehicles but the fact remains the shock does not hold the truck up. The spring (or airbag) does

I don't know the answer to the OP question just wanted to clear up the function of the shock absorber

It can however hold the truck down... As I found after swapping my front shocks after I tried to level the front and nearly nothing happened...IMG_20170513_163616.jpg

Not sure why I didn't take a photo of them both out but the olds were clearly shorter than the replacement, and the awful clunk on down travel disappeared.

I've got a 2000 Eddie Bauer 4 wheel drive that has the bigger motor. Mine uses torsion bars in front, and coil spring rear. I had no luck with aftermarket shocks. I tried motorcraft they aren't the same as Ford I tried bilsteins, both rode horrible. I finally found 4 original ford ones across the country, and what do you know my soft oem ride returned. I don't why these company's that make aftermarket parts can't duplicate the original, but you know what they can't. This is why all the older techs on this forum recommend Ford dealer parts myself included. The only aftermarket shock that works decent if you can't find Ford ones is Kyb. Have your localFord dealer go on his/ her parts locater. Hope that helps. Bring your vin so they can get your right parts.

If you want a nice soft ride, Monroe gas shocks work well. Old beater rode like a semi with the Bilstein blue and yellows. Tossed the Monroe's on and it was like a Cadillac by comparison.

Coming from a lifted diesel and driving a semi all day, my expedition could have square wheels and it's be a nice ride by comparison.

I agree about the bilsteins. Brand new they ride like a worn shock. I've had a bad experience with Monroe on one of our town cars, but maybe their better on these SUVs.

Old saying was I could run over a penny and tell you the year with the Bilsteins.

Never really bought shocks for a car, always driven trucks so I can't speak for those, but I always had good luck with Monroe's till I started lifting my trucks.

Currently saving for a full lift then I'll be running some much higher quality shocks. Couldn't justify anything pricey when I plan on them being gone by spring.

You know the shame of it is their an amazing shock/ strut for German cars, at least they were a few years back. Guess that's what happens when companies start varying from what their good at. Anyone old enough to remember full size Fords from the 60's and 70's including Mustang. Then Ford thought let's build a compact like the Japanese. Ah the Pinto!
