1st timer here but been on these forums for 2 days now! so much info! lots to consider so heres my attempt at sum up! Be gentle remember its my 1st time posting. BTW Ive owned & worked on my own vehicles which include 2004 Expedition (todays quandary) 1994 ranger & sorry guys but my Fav for 24yrs 1970 Dodge Dart Swinger as much as possible for years If that gets me any pts! Here it goes!

  • 2004 Eddie Bauer Expy 5.4L 8cyl 185,652 miles currently bought Aug 2015
  • Have had coolant leak for year due to gaskets or in the manifold mechanic not sure which until he takes apart either way $$$ for labor same for either leak but big dif in price. but keep coolant full & temp gauge never goes past middle
  • Had draw drain battery last summer. replaced battery & fuseable link Been Good since
  • Have few pesky fuse & non working things since purchase-now make me say hmm Ex. TPMS & Wiper motor, vanity mirror, frnt cabin light & drivers Pwr seat don't work & blew fuses for frnt aux ports 2X.(was preg @ purchase delivered 10/2015 & again 6/2017couldnt fix till after) flshers fuseblew, drvr rear brake & turn sig.Blew bulb flasher fuse blew.
  • AC blower surges bit fr0m time to time & rear blower clicking recently
  • there are fuses & such that share connection etc that lead me to wonder but truck runs great most times till this week.
2x in the past 3 days truck has cut out quiet like no power or engine but not stalled the 1st time exiting freeway when I tried to accelerate to turn it did nothing was coasting put it in N turned off AC put flashers on then dropped into D & she moved made it home red Battery light flashed when it was cutting out. Went had charging system checked battery & Alt 100% no codes. ran fine til yesterday. Same thing same freeway slowing etc except it shut off on BF & didn't start for a bit. service engine light on now. drives ok but had code read @ O'Riellys said charging system GOOD But said was tellin him O2 sensor 1 bank 1 lean.(but didnt tell me actual code#)said to replace it & fuel filter. But I am reading posts here & thinking it could be or not. Is checkin for vacuum leak 1st ok? I Live In Tempe AZ we hit 122 the day it started & remembered Ive had Vapor lock issues with past cars in past & fuel relay prob did same thing. Prts aren't $$ but don't want it to do again with babies after replacing O2 if it is a relay or leak throwing code What do u guys think? I'm all ears. Ive seen equal amts of each being culprit on 3 diff forums so I'm hoping for more specific advice to help me decide. Toting 20 & 1mth old babies around plus I'm gonna in 117' heat fixin it so want to be sure. Thanks For any clarity Ya'll may hve! I hate computerized cars! Gimmie a carb I prime to start & adjust anytime! Hope to hear soon!! Mookie

Welcome to the site.

Before I read the novel above.... the real question here is.... just what was under the hood in that Swinger. 383 - 440 - 426????

..........

Without the code all you are going to get is a list of "could be this, could be that".

Only way to get a lean code is low fuel amount or too much air for each injection cycle.

Work on one problem at a time.

Check the sensor physically. For some reason my 05 likes to splice it's own O2 sensor wires frequently... runs in limb mode.

Well it's not what WAS but Is STILL under hood today & that's the original 318. Workhorse motor if ever I drove one. Love it!

I went & had code read again at Advance auto after post & showed same code sensor1 bank 1 lean. It has just under half tank & then quarter tank on both reads. I am buying an obd wireless scanner today for $20 it's useful I think. You said too much air could be why code popped up, how & where would I look to check if I can? If that's case fuel or air is cause is correct what do u suggest to fix it? Thanks for read my novel! Lol

Damn spell correct. Habbibies phone must have thought an 02 sensor was a tree! Melanie if you have a Exaust leak, particular to that cylinder, or any vacuum leaks, that can contribute to lean condition. How does it idle? Smooth? As usual, you've got multiple items to address. As habbibie said physically make sure your 02 sensors wires are ok. Your engine dying is a whole different animal. Do a fuel pressure test. A failing, or clogged fuel system in your heat can be causing issues. 122 degrees is above any fuel system behaving. In Phoenix the other day they grounded the planes, because it went above 118. Apparently 118 is the magic number that makes fuel boil. I don't know for sure, but forum members in the past that had charging or electrical malfunctions, found it was due to add on electrics. You may want to dissconnect those items, and see if your electrical gremlins diminish. Good luck, keep us posted what you find. Moose.

Truck really didn't feel tough idleing or driving at all. Never had actually except for 2 most recent issues. But sometimes lately when I start the truck & when I've heard it pull in my driveway it's idled high of sound is a clue cuz it seems much louder like an electric fan motor blowing. And does smell not rich or like I have exhaust leak. Guess I better track down a repair book or download some schematics think I've got a few things need looking into. Will let u know in a day or so if i don't burst into flames! Oh I did wonder and check all the extra electric xtras too! I'm hoping! Thanks again

Unfortunately you've got more than 1 issue. Definitely get a dealer repair cd or books. Their available online. We used to have one of our regular gurus on our site that sold copies of first and second generation CDs. Haven't seen him out here for awhile, your probably hearing your clutch fan operating, especially in your extreme heat. You'll need to address the most troublesome issues, then move along from there. That o2 sensor that's acting up is cheap enough to replace. Might want to start there. It's amazing what trouble one defective part can do to a normally running SUV. Do all of us a favor, don't change parts all willy nilly. Diagnose, then repair problem with wiring or gasket, etc then replace part. Keeps the cost way down. Borrow a fuel pressure guage, or buy, let us know fuel pressure, very important on fuel injected vehicle. Keep us posted, you've got some real talent on this forum. Better than dealer techs in many cases. Moose!
