My 05 expedition has a tap. Almost sounds like diesel. Lol. My neighbor has same truck and said he put real heavy oil in to stop the noise and it worked. I know this isn't recommended but what do you think the heaviest oil I can put in?

Oil is only going to disguise the problem but not make it go away. It could be a bad cam lobe or the cam phasers.

I know this isn't your engine but does it sound like this:

This one is the 5.4 3 valve engine like you have.

Here is another good one to help diagnose your noise:

yes im masking it. im not looking into tearing engine up right now. whats the heaviest oil i can put in?
I don't remember what I was using in my 05. I want to say 5w 30 or maybe 40. Call your local dealer and see what they do with high mileage engines. I know my dealer was using heavier oil, but I can't remember the viscosity and I just checked in the garage and I don't see any leftover oil.

I wouldn't jack the entire engine for a noise, just dump one or two cans of STP oil "treatment" into it...it will SILENCE the noise. Screw around with a straight 40/60 or 80 weight and come some nice cold day this coming winter, you'll meld that engine into a single piece of steel again<LOL>!

If your not looking into actually fixing the problem... look into Lukas oil.

Put about 6 quarts in then half a bottle of Lukas. Drive it then top off the rest if ticking does not stop.

I will never recommend this to any one that is in the US. If a third world country individual requires a quick fix to help save lives. Yes.

Honestly read the forums. Ask many people here. We can help a tick. Might not be fun or cheap. But super thick oil in out truck...??

Good luck. Hope it does work for you and your goals.

I run Rotella T6 5w-40 with a Motorcraft filter and my Expy LOVES it. But, I have no ticks/knocks. I sent oil samples (3,000 miles and 7,500 miles) out for testing, waiting for results. From my experience and a quick exam at home I am positive I can go over 10k miles with this combo.

There is another thread (I started) in engine directory here. Its is a quick analysis of oils and filters. USE AN OEM MOTORCRAFT OIL FILTER! Believe it or not, it makes a difference as the filter is designed to maintain a certain pressure throughout the system. That coupled with a good quality Syn oil will give you best results.

Fords Have always had some noisy drivetrains. The 5.4 is a loud ticky engine from new. The new 6.2 Boss sounds just like the 5.4 and just tick ticks away if you open the hood on one. Same with the ecoboost in the 150 it ticks away like crazy too (when they were first released I thought they were all going to blow up they sounded horrible). It must be their Over head cam design that makes all these so noisy.

Like the other members said, your masking a problem that will only get worse. According to a few owners in the past, switching to a diesel oil, and a quality filter, seemed to quiet down their engines. Stuck lifters, and failing cam sensors, and or chain tensioner are usual suspect's on your engine. If you want to experiment with a heavier oil, I wouldn't go more than 5/w40, one weight heavier. Try the diesel oil in 5w30 first.

+1

5w40 Rotella T6 diesel full synth gets on swimmingly with the 5.4L Triton 3v... mpg numbers straight out of the manual @ 172k w/ regular gas

Also use motorcraft filters....they're $4 at Walmart, why use anything else????

I add one can of Liquimoly Ceratec though

PS im in SoCal cant comment on winter issues
