So I have a 97 5.4L and when doing my head gasket damaged my passenger valve cover, nothing major just an annoying slow leak.

Parts truck is a 98 4.6L, wondering if the covers are different or the same.

From eyeball it's the same, but haven't ripped them both off to check, anyone know before I pull it off next week? Otherwise I gotta hit the wrecker a few cities over.

4.6 and 5.4 2V engines are essentially the same, except
for the taller deck hight of the 5.4 block, do to it's longer
stroke which is the only thing that makes it a 5.4.
The differences in the engines, from what I've read,
depends on where it was made. Either Windsor,
Ontario or Romeo, Michigan. If both engines were made
at the same facility, chances are the valve covers will
interchange. There might be a different number of
bolts fastening the cover or head between the two factories. This is where further research is needed.

1999 - 2004 Ford 5.4 4.6 V8 2V SOHC are the same as darmahsd states. Check PCV location.

This is what I was thinking, as I know swapping heads is a common enough mod, they had to be similar enough.

Guess I'll pull it and see what happens after the body lift.
