I’ll chime in on the AWD Subaru, I’n replacing my 2005 Baja with my ‘18 Navigator and I’ve had the Baja since it was new. I was more than surprised by this cars ability in snow/mud/forest service roads. I feel that the Subaru is underpowered but I never felt like I was going to get into a place that I couldn’t get out of. I’m expecting the Navigator to be more capable off road and clearly the power isn’t going to be an issue anymore nor is interior space. I will be a little sad to leave the Subaru at the dealership for the trade in, that will probably last until the first red light where I accelerate easily to the speed limit in a quarter the time the Subaru required.

18 navigator vs 05 Baja
GROUND CLEARANCE !!!
seems like that's the biggest thing getting you stuck in deep snow or gravel ruts

Not saying 4x4 isn't useful.... nor sayings a Subaru isn't useful, just saying many people don't understand the systems and their limitations. I have Control Trac 4WD in my expy and have taken it off road, which a majority of owners don't do. 4WD only helps and assists in acceleration on slippery surfaces, it does not assist in steering or braking, which is a majority of the driving experience. Secondly 4x4 is never true 4x4 unless you have front and rear lockers. If you use 4x4 in rain and need it your accelerating way too hard. A Subaru won't begin to even touch what an expy/Navigator is capable of, that being said Congrats on your new Navi Artie. But just saying a properly driven 4x2 is very capable with a knowledgeable driver.

If you do start to slide in snow or when turning a corner ... IMHO ... 4WD or AWD is an advantage. My first front wheel drive was an Audi Fox and it was impossible to get the rear end to spin out (fishtail?) in snow. It just pulled me around corners.

Gotta know what you're driving / how vehicle works and utilize it. You used to have to tap on the brakes when they locked up in heavy braking. Now done by computer, had to learn not to do that when antilock brakes first arrived

Off topic but I just looked up the Baja, I don't think I've ever seen one of those looks like a cool little car. Polarizer 4WD will assist on steering from a stop, which IMO is a part of acceleration, but if you are coasting or braking and turn the wheel it's no different from a 2 wheel drive car in the way it reacts. Hence why I say it will only assist on acceleration.

I was surprised to learn the Navi is only a little over an inch higher than my Subaru. 8.4 for the Subaru 9.6 for the Navi.

It’s actually pretty neat but it doesn’t excel at being a car or a truck. It does excel as a great vehicle if you have an active lifestyle that includes camping and hiking and the like. The truck bed is big enough to accommodate plenty of stuff you wouldn’t want inside your car and the car itself is based on the legacy platform so it’s a good driver in the turns. Super easy to work on as well. I’ve been a happy owner and may have considered another Subaru but our requirements are seating for 7-8, 4x4, well built, plush interior. The Expy or Navi fit this bill very nicely.
