Admittedly the last 'new' vehicle I bought was in 2013 (not a Ford). It and all my previous vehicles(no Fords) had gas caps. A surprise to me was that my 2017 Expedition Limited does not have a gas cap; it just has a 'seal' on the 'door' to the gas? I guess this is something Ford has done for several years? New/Surprise to me.

Anyway.....has anyone done the 'Locking Fuel Filler Plug'? What are your experiences with using one? Any negatives? positives?

or should one just not bother???????

I bought a new 2015 Expedition Limited 4x4 with the cap less fuel filller neck. I bought the locking gas cap plug from Ford and use it. I keep the keys (it came with two) on the push button start fobs. I have never had a problem with the cap or keys. I had a third key made at a local hardware store and keep it in the glovebox as backup. The plug is inexpensive and is mostly plastic, other than the key cylinder.

I live in a nice area but like the idea of a locking gas cap, especially when I travel, to prevent gas theft and as a backup to prevent fuel spillage in an accident.

My input as a tech is I like the capless design for convenience. the flap is good ... BUT the flap has gaps around it, and as far as the door goes we all know gaskets break down over time. With that being said human errors can accelerate sealing issues and door misalignment Via a gas attendant who is aggressive or even high winds during fueling. so many variables that can interrupt door seal. when contamination invades those failed systems the in tank filter will fail. its just logical to add a form of "cap" to limit the chances of contamination.. I added the locking cap to protect my investment from contamination not theft ..Just my professional opinion

Hey Str3tchnut5,
What is the p/n and where did you get the locking cap?
I want one for the same reason, to keep anyone from dumping something into the tank.

Of note though, is the fuel door on the cap-less system opens when the fuel nozzle from a gas pump depresses tabs on the sides. This is why you can't push on the door with your finger and open it. In order to add fuel additives, etc., you will have to use the dedicated white plastic funnel located under the spare tire tool panel in the floor compartment behind the rear seat. It's the exact diameter of a fuel nozzle to depress these tabs and open the door.

You can buy such funnels also.

I've always just put these in my larger vehicles. They won't do anything for contamination though.
