I wouldn't expect much out of the adjustability. I have had the struts on my truck for about 1.5 years and only adjusted them in the begining to get it right. (4 f / 7R) I have had no need to adjust them since. I also read that if you don't turn the knobs once a month they freeze up. My rancho's are the 2" front and 3/4" rear. I bought these for the lift.

I am really considering the Rancho shocks on Rockauto, that's the best deal on those shocks I've seen. I just purchased my 05 Exp in January, blew motor up in March (phaser went bad and took out timing chain guide, go figure) and got it back on the road in July with a new Ford crate motor. So far everything has been working fine and I have got almost 2,000 miles on it after the motor swap. Since I am now under water for what I have in the Exp I will be keeping it for a loooong time so I have decided to start making more my style.

I recently picked up a set of 2014 Raptor wheels for my ride. Currently I have highway tires on factory wheels and have been trying to decide if I should wait until I can afford some new rubber before putting them on and keep the factory wheel/tire combo for a backup or just do a swap now. I have had the wheels for about 3 days and I am going crazy!! I can't wait to see them on my ride!

Purchasing these shocks would put off the rubber purchase a bit but if I can wait and do it all at once its gonna look and perform better instantly.

Recently took my Exp. on its first hunting trip chasing antelope here in MT. I very quickly realized that I need a lift. Bottomed out several times and had me nervous and the ruts were not deep at all. I am rethinking the Rancho shocks since the lift factor isn't much. I like the fact that they are adjustable but I am needed more than an inch. I realize bigger tires will help lift it more but I am not looking to put 35's on there as of now, I might be persuaded in time. I am probably going to get through this winter and see what I come up with next spring.

Put these on mine about 8 months ago and 7k miles. So far so good. The lift is nice. My only complaint is they are stiff on the small bumps. Our neighborhood roads have lots of imperfections and i feel them all, on the freeway it handles great and does well on the rutted dirt roads. Getting the settings right is the tricky part! 4f7r is a good setting as stated before. I think new tires will help my small bump issue.

For the 2004 Ford Expedition 4x4 XLT.

I'm curious about these struts. they only provide 1.25" of suspension lift, which is fine, you can still add spacers, body lift, whatever works.

what I'm curious about, though, is that this strut only has 5" of stroke. It's my understanding the 2nd Gen expy has 9" of suspension travel... so what's the point of lifting it with anything at all that effectively cripples the suspension?
what am I missing here?

I believe the 5" of stroke on the strut translates to 9" of travel when you get out to the center of the wheel, so the travel stays the same. Thes struts give a bit of lift, so you can run a larger tire with less rub and they give you adjustability for your prefered firmness of ride.

I hear ya, but I don't buy it. that just does not make sense to me. if the bottom of the shock only moves a max of 5", the lower control arm can't move more than that relative to the upper.

If I remember right the factory strut and rancho were identical except the lower part of the Rancho strut was lengthened some. Between the bottom of the chamber and the lower mounting hole. I think I have a side by side picture, will try to find.

Actually, the upper and lower control arms move in unison since they are tied to the knuckle. The shock extends up between the upper control arm but isn't connected to it. The shock comes down and ties into the lower control arm somewhere in the middle, and the chassis end is fixed, so if the center of the control arm moves 5 inches, you end up moving end of the control arm further.

That's also why when you buy a 3" lift, the spacer that you add to the top of the coilover is actually less than that.
