Hi everyone! I noticed recently on our 2015 Expy short wheel base that there are two cracks on both left and right seams that runs on the length of the roof. As you can see in the pictures the cracks are at the end of the seems just forward of the rear hatch. The dealer confirmed that it is the body sealant that covers the seams that is cracked. They have never seen this before and took pictures and is sending to Ford for warranty consideration. Not sure what the fix will be but wondering if anyone here as every seen these cracks.

Thanks,

Jon

Dealer's just "confirming" the first least expensive thing to come to mind off the top of his head, hoping to keep you away until your warranty runs out

Btw, that roof sheet metal? A whole LOT thinner than you'd expect by looking at it. Don't delay don't settle for crap

PS that crack so ain't along no weld.... plastic trim on pillars comes off super easy, best pull it up and get a look under the headliner from the inside

I have a 2003 Excursion, same type of sealant on the roof with associated cracks. These cracks worsen over time, allow water to seep in and then rust. Both rear sides of my Excursion roof have significant rust on them now as a result. Mind you there is no other corrosion elsewhere on this FL truck. Have it fixed early!

Jon, I'm not seeing your pictures but I have heard of roof seam cracking from other owners.. If you search this forum for roof seam cracks you can see what turns up.

Yikes Andy, are you watching for these on your roof? Where exactly are you guys finding these? I couldn’t see your photos either :)

If I remember correctly the roof is one-piece and where it meets the sides where the drain channel is outside the roof rack is where the crack occurs. I believe they weld the roof on and then apply a flexible sealer which is then painted over. Over time, the paint cracks at the seam. This is what I saw on my 05. Once a year I would just go up the ladder and apply touch up paint to the seam. It was never a real problem other than cosmetic and since I'm short, I never saw it unless I was on the ladder so out of site out of mind. :D

Not saying this is the issue, but I've seen roof seam cracked as the result of a rear-end collision. Probably wasn't a 35MPH slam from behind while stopped, but something hard enough to make the shell of the truck flex or tweak a little. Body shop can tell if this was the case, and if so them sealing with clear silicone is reasonable. Plenty of good used cars out there, sometimes they come with a few hidden surprises.
