Wanted to share some info. 17 Limited with 20k. Has been cold as he*l here in PA lately and I started to notice a rough idle on cold start. I could feel it in the steering wheel and “see” it when I looked the engine, wife says she didn’t notice anything. So I thought maybe I was over thinking things, but me being me, new plugs (motorcraft 534, gap 30) and new coil boots. Plugs looked ok, little carboned up, not awful, gaps between 32 and 36. No change in idle. Then did a PCM reset and went through the idle relearn process, cleaned all 3 sensors, air temp, boost before throttle body, intake pressure (this one was a little oily), also filled up with a fresh tank of 91( top tier). Idled much better. So not sure if it was plugs, the relearn, the gas, map sensor, or a combo of all four. Just wanted to pass it along. Also if you are an over maintenance guy, I recommmed plugs maybe every 30 after seeing these at 20. Also plan on hitting the intake pressure sensor every oil change from now on. Cheers

What did you do for the PCM reset?

Got to kill the capacitors, so disconnect negative battery terminal and either run a jumper from the neg lead to the positive ( throw a rag over the neg batt terminal so nothing bad happens) or just leave it un hooked overnight. Then turn everything off inside, radio, lights, heater, turn key on for 10 seconds, then start, don’t touch the throttle for 10 minutes until operating temp, then put in drive and run heater at full blast to put load on the engine, after that idle is reset.

But this also resets the shift adapts, so you need to go drive it for a awhile getting it up into 6th and back down. No full throttle, nice and easy

Awesome gonna try this along with some CRC map cleaner tomorrow. Fuel mileage has dropped ALOT this past month. Intake temperature and boost sensor are clean. Have t checked intake manifold pressure sensor yet but from videos I’ve seen I bet it’s filthy. 22k miles on my 16. You use CRC to clean yours?

Yep crc map cleaner, make sure the sensor is cool or cold. My guess is that sensor is always a little oily from crankcase vapor, how much is too much or how much causes problems will be something to watch

Before and after of MAP sensor on intake manifold after only 22k miles. Will be cleaning this one every oil change from here on out. Will check plugs at 30k

Is this the one right past the air filter? I take the top lid of the air box off to change the oil filter and mine looked clean with 40k on the clock. I get a rough idle every now and then, I was planning on changing the plugs to see if that would help.

Edit: just went look under the hood and I see it obviously not the one after the air filter...

No, take the black engine cover off and it’s got one screw holding it into the manifold almost dead center under the cover

I have a 2015 Expediton Limitd 4x4, purchased new, now with 37,*** miles.

I'm in the Midwest and we've had sub-zero temperatures. I have also noticed a rough idle after a cold start. After several moments, the idle smooths out. I replaced the air filter with a Motorcraft one at 15,000 and 30,000 miles.

How hard is it to changed the spark plugs? I use Top Tier fuel almost exclusively. Thank you.

Does the black engine cover pop-off, or are there one or more screws holding it on? Thank you.
