I do my best to try to ignore the fact I have an expensive Exp that I have to junk up with an old sock just to be able to enjoy driving it. 
I hear your brother. I'm thinking about getting a scrap piece of black vinyl and just cover the top of the chrome down to the bottom of the leather grip. I think that will make it look nice and I'll still keep the chrome on the bottom of the shifter.Same here. That's why I carry an old black sock inside the console that I slip over the shifter when the glare is too bright.
