Hi! I own a 2001 5.4 Liter Eddie Bauer and my car won’t start. The engine is cranking, which makes me think the fuel pump shutoff switch might’ve been tripped. I’ve been looking for the reset button, and the manual says it’s on the right side of the passenger kick panel, but digging around in there I haven’t been able to find it.

Also, the thing has been popping a CEL for a couple of months now. It’s a P1405, and it seems like one of the vacuum hoses connected to the DPFE sensor is severed. Would that possibly stop the vehicle from starting?

Thank you!

It could, it basically works like a map sensor for the egr system manifold absolute pressure. Not to state the obvious, but get a hunk of hose that size, and reconnect it. I had a regular map sensor go bad on my 84 Lincoln, it ran but kept dying each time I came to stop.If you've followed any of the fuel related posts here, first order of business is to remove air horn going to throttle body, open throttle give a blast or two of starter fluid. If it starts, then dies, its fuel related. Usually unless the vehicle was in an accident or rolled over, the fuel switch doesn't trip. But that is the proper place to check voltage in, and out to fuel pump. Post what you find.

DPFE Upstream Hose Off

Replace BOTH hoses Most likely dry rotted That would not cause the engine not to start but would cause it to run rough

The cut off switch is behind the passenger side kick panel Not to hard to see it Check it for voltage into and out of the switch If the engine isn't running you will only see 12 volts for a few seconds or while it is cranking

As was suggested Spray some started fluid into the throttle body while someone is trying to start the expy Don't over spray. If it tries to fire up most likely you need a new fuel pump. Also replace fuel filter

Check your fuel pressure at the fuel rail while you are attempting to start

How many miles on the expy??

The expedition has about 225,000 miles on it, and it does not seem like the fuel pump is turning on at all. Ive heard that the fuel pump driver module is a problem on these cars, yet i am having trouble locating it on this model. Considering how rusty the bottom is and the way the symptoms popped up (started as extended crank/rough idle, then would intermittent no start, and now it is not starting at all, will just turn over forever), this is something id want to check out. Does anyone know of any videos/diagrams specifically for the 2001 expedition with the 5.4L? All of the stuff ive found does not seem to match up. Again thanks for any and all help, im going to try to borrow a volt meter to test what you guys said.

As was suggested Replace both hoses for the DPFE sensor

Spray some starter fluid into the throttle body and see if the engine fires up for a short bit

Report back with the results

And if you need correct info about the expedition check on this forum

When my fuel pump failed, the 1st thing I checked was to see if I had pressure on the fuel rail at the Schrader valve with the ignition on. There was no pressure and there was no audible indication the fuel pump was running in the on position, so the temp solution was to rap on the fuel tank with a B.F.H. (Big "Fancy" Hammer...) and the pump started to run. Once I got it back home, I had the pump replaced.
