I neglected to change my oil before a 2,200 mile (one-way) cross-country road trip, and then continued to neglect it for a good 3 weeks before I finally got around to it. When I finally changed it, the oil had run 15,311km, or 9,513 miles. I took a sample and sent it off to Blackstone Labs in Indiana, to see the horrible things I had undoubtedly done to my engine.

I wonder what the report would look like on an Ecoboost with the same interval [emoji15]

Cool to see no harm done, The 5.4 seems in good health. Surprised they said to try longer when oil is cheap to change for assurance.

I wouldn't go longer because if the next test shows a negitave result and maybe minor damage there's no going back. I doubt it will but I still wouldn't chance it.

Just curious what does Blackstone charge? Ive never had a test done but I'm pretty interested.

$28, including all shipping. $10 for TBN to tell you how much additive is left. Order a sample kit on their website, they only charge when they receive your sample.

I think I’m going to sample after a normal oil life interval this time, and see if there’s much of a difference. More than 6,000 of those miles were straight 75mph on I-80, I wanna see what it looks like with an oil change of just city driving.

Blackstone lab reports are interesting and helpful for us bus conversion owners too. Our two stroke Detroit diesel oil reports can actually predict an impending failure. I’ve seen it happen on some of my friends labs. Crazy but true. Unrelated to our Expeditions, it’s interesting how different engines have different tolerances for oil change intervals. During its entire life, my 4.7 V8 in my Land Cruiser received 20,000 mile oil change intervals with Mobil 1 extended performance full synthetic. When I traded it in at nearly 300,000 miles, the engine neither burned nor leaked a drop of oil and even after 20,000 miles, the oil I drained out of the pan still looked like dark honey. Never ceased to amaze me.

I mailed my sample off on Monday. The oil had 5200 miles on it since it’s last change and 14900 total on the truck. I figure everything is well broken in by now and it’s right at the 5000 mike change interval I plan to stick to so curious to see what results I get

Had I known of this I might have asked for a sample recently. Found out when I got my 2016 the dealer had let it got just over 10,000 miles from the last oil change. Yes, I had them change the oil as soon as I found out.
