While waiting on the parts for transmission rebuild, I was browsing the local classifieds and realized one of my neighbors has his 2012 Expy for sale. It's an ex police vehicle, with the 5.4 High Performance badges on the hood. Unlike the other photos and description of SSV models I have seen, this one has a full interior including 2nd row seats, but no 3rd row. The two obvious remnants of police service is the A pillar police light and a custom locking console in front. This one is 4wd. Is there any way to tell if it's an SSV version except running the VIN through Etis?

While most have black grilles, ALL have black door handles. They were available with a floor shifter and console as an option.

There are an entire list of things common to 95% of the SSV's, but customers could special order many options and several packages. MOST SSV's have cloth seats up front an vinyl in the back. MOST have the high ratio rear axle. MOST have the column shifter. MOST have vinyl floor covering. MOST have steel wheels.

Since there was no "street appearance option" available, ALL the SSV's had black door handles.

You can search for the pdf file "2012 Expedition SSV Modifiers Guide" which lists all the standard and optional features of an SSV.

Must be an SSV, but it has a lot of civilian options, it has the black door handles and grill, but it also has 20" Ford alloy wheels, vinyl seats in front and full carpet, fog lights also has the HD tow package according to the owner.
I'll run the VIN once I get it, it's going to make a hard decision to fix the trans in a 2005 or just buy another one.

Fog lights were included on all SSVs. Seat swaps and wheel swaps are pretty common for aftermarket.

More typical SSV features:
*no running boards (so aftermarket boards or steps may clue you in)
*very basic CD and radio, no trip computer no nav no park sensors etc (so aftermarket head unit may also be an indicator)
*XLT badging

Ultimately though, if everything is swapped over anyway, what do you care?

PS chrome grille swaps are like $72 so...

This one has factory running boards. I didn't really care about it being an SSV vs a civilian model to start with, but most of the ones I see are ex city police or K9 units and fairly stripped comfort wise, a fair amount of them are stripped on the interior once they remove all of the police gear for auction. This one was a state police vehicle according to the owner. What I really was interested in was the HD towing package, if it actually has it. I pull a 28' camper with the one I have now, and it's on its second transmission already.

Tried it, it appears to be broken.
Their USer interface is screwy. The entry box doesn’t contrast well. You enter the vin then click on the Ford emblem after the entry box to submit. On mobile devices the emblem is under the entry field.
