Even with that one leaky valve or bad rings/ piston it should run. Try bedrcks old test of starter fluid straight into throttle body. It would take a huge amount of bad fuel to shut it down. Take a sample anyway. If your not getting multiple codes, computers working. Check fuses involving spark/ fuel, you never know. Your right about standard non chip key.

So I found the problem Saturday finally.... it was a freaking nightmare to find it too and I don't even know what it is even called exactly but the teeth that the starter uses on the crank to spin the crank a bunch of those teeth are stripped, I spun the crank bu hand till there was a section long enough for the starter to make a full cycle and the car started up and ran.

I'm not doing that repair for him, not for free at least I told him junk it or sell it especially cause the one piston is under compression too

Watch the language or there's no soup for you.

That piece is called the ring gear and is easily replaced if sold individually. If not, it is new flywheel or flex plate.

Had same thing happen on a Santa fe it turned out to be a breaker type fuse in the underhood box. It had cracked in half from someone jumping it with the cables reversed. It's not a relay on a hyundai just the main fuse, takes a screw driver to remove and is the only one of its kind in the panel. Just a thought .....

The problem has been figured out (post #12), the fact that it was cranking rules out the main line fuse you're talking about but I appreciate the help though TY

You had a really worn ring gear. Usually it's just a couple of bad teeth that makes the starter do that zing sound when you hit starter. I did one years back on a lady's Toyota corolla. I pulled it of brought to my parts/ machine shop here in Daly City. They pressed off/on new ring. It was pretty cool watching the guy do it. Your buddy's cars a candidate for the clunker buy back program. Here in California we get $1,000 for turning in a clunka junk!
