3.5 oil change mess

Has anyone tried to lay something like these oil absorbing pads in the plastic oil-routing tray to catch the oil filter spill when changing the oil on the 3.5 Ecoboost?

Minus the removal of the felt cover, my 17 Expy has to be one of the easiest oil changes ive ever done. No mess at all

Just get rid of that stupid felt cover it’s useless and is holding unneeded moisture anyway.....problem solved

Maybe I'm missing something... or they changed this in the 2017's? Even with the felt cover and skid plate removed, you can't remove the oil filter easily without making a mess in the plastic tray under it. I was thinking of laying one of these pads in that tray to catch the bulk of the oil.

Im not understanding the making a mess part. Your supposed to loosen the oil filter (which is way easier than folks make it out to be) and let the oil drain onto the tray below where it will then flow out the opening from where that weird rubber square thing gets removed, right into a waiting oil pan. After its done draining remove the oil filter and install the new one. Its a pretty efficient little setup they designed. I find you make more of a mess trying to loosen a filter and get your drain pan under it to catch the oil.

Are you worried about the residual oil that drains out onto the tray? If so Im 3 oil changes into my truck and haven't noticed any mess made by leftover oil.

That's what I'm after. I use dozens of rags to try to wipe out that tray. My assumption was that if I didn't do so, I would be leaving drips everywhere. Maybe that's an invalid concern.

Like I said I’m into 3 oil changes now I’ve done personally and I haven’t noticed any drips as of yet. I don’t discount you wanting to put some rags up in there though just in case.

Has anyone tried pulling up on ramps? I was wondering if the angle would make the filter oil run down engine block making a mess. I’m ready for my 2nd oil change and would like having more room this time underneath. I’m not as streamlined as I once was. If nessesary I could Floor jack up the rear to level it out

I have mine at a bit of an angle and have not had a problem. (Not as much as if on ramps). Also, I let it drain in tray and it falls and runs out where it’s supposed to. I take I paper towel and wipe the drain channel once just to get any excess that may be in there and that’s it. Have not had any leak out after change. On my 3rd oil change since I purchased my preowned 2015.
